HEY DRIVERS, FORMER DRIVERS, WANNEBES WHO EVER THAT ABLE TO READ THIS. PLEASE RESPOND. Okay this the problem; Am 22 yrs old and am a former OTR driver for SNI (only 6months) but as of now i'm a local dump truck driver making 10 bucks an hour working up and down hours..(10 one day, 4 the next, off, etc, etc.) And right now it's just not making ends meet to be honest! So right now am deeply considering going back on the road.... Me and my wife was having and arguement. I want to go back now with western express to gain flatbed experience now(brimingham terminal)>>out with a trainer 4weeks than home everyweek for a 34hr restart..<< She want me to wait until our son gets a little older or what not (he's will be one on july 23) then she said why not wait until you are 23yrs old which is next May and go with maverick trucking so you want have to change jobs like that within a two year period.(from where am at now to western to maverick)Am looking at it a little different.( I can go now with western express and drive that little over a year with them until am 23yrs old and than switch to Maverick as a experience driver instead of a student!!!! And start something special with a ####! good company.... Make sense to anyone???!!
WHAT THE BEST..Option.???

My thought is this. Although switching from job to job never looks good on a resume, it looks worse if you are not driving. BUT, make sure you check out both of these companies, with other drivers and with the Better Business Bureaus. Also, as for your child, yes he will miss you. He will get over it. It's easier for a child that young than it is for one that's older. Again, a big BUT, you will be missing out on a whole lot of development and a lot of FIRSTS. You will miss birthdays, holidays, broken bones, tears, hugs he needs from his daddy. Mommy will then have to provide ALL of that, and is she TRULY willing? Also, you will have to get used to your child not knowing who you are, each and every time you come home. So, good luck, in the long run the choice is completely up to you.

But like you said its totally up to me. But hey thanks for the reply

Your a young man with a baby and a CDL driver, there are other options where you can make real good money. The trucking industry HHG driver positions do not advertise like the frieght part of the industry. Check the yellow pages for moving companies like United Van Lines, Mayflower, Graebel, and go talk to the dispatcher. They will start you on local crews and most start local at $16 hr until trained. Then once qualified you can stay local, or OTR and try to survive on $120,000 yr. in pocket after expences. The only problems you will have is getting that baby grand piano down off the third floor. Done both flatbeds and HHG, in my opinion flatbed drivers are way underpaid.

Y'know - there's a lot to be said on both sides of the argument.
However, why have your sights set on OTR at all? There are all kinds of local jobs - and many take rookies/newbies. I was accepted (but declined) a local job. Work nights. Home days (well, occasional extended runs) home weekends. *salaried*, so no worries about miles.
Can take a look at tanks, too. I was in line for a sweet tank job, but the deal fell through (no fault of the company - they told me up front it was a contingency thing).
The point, of course, is that dump/cement are not the only local options available for newbies. -
What part of MS are you from? just in general if you wish. I am from northeast MS, I might know of some companies that will give you both, money and home every day or every couple of days.
If you live close to this area, look around. Development everywhere! Steel mills, Toyota, and lots more mean better jobs all around.

Am from down southwest part of MS.(natchez, vicksburg area). I do know of this company by the name of forest products that runs regional runs with 2-3 days out hauling chips and logs. Think i will just wait it out..

Just out of my noseyness, why only 6 months before leaving SNI the first time around?
-
To be honest everything was okay with SNI. Everyone was dealing with the hometime etc, etc. All of a sudden it turn to the worst; mainly because i had a new born at home (just came home) so that played a big part in it also. So I said i would just wait until he's a little older where she can handle him a little better. Thats was our plan together! So really its an up and down thing, like now she understand what i've been saying and want to know more of my so call plan instead of giving me the cold shoulder. So i have until ummmm june 6th to make a decision with Western Exp. To get reay to leave out with a trainer June 11th...Either go and get my year in with them and switch to maverick and come on as a experience driver or wait at this half ### job until am 23 than go with them as a student for 4-8wks .. And am really leaning torwards following my first train of thought. Go with western and get this training over with and than go for it. Just Can't make everyone happy!!!!
