What's the big deal with writing "unemployed" on the application?

Hi all! Great forum. Much more active than the other two i used to read years ago.

I was wondering why it's such a big deal to account for all your life on a driving app? I filled out an app at a local company, who's recruiter I met at school and got to know. My instructor even works for this guy's company part-time hauling tanker on the weekends, and he called this guy and gave me a glowing recommendation.

Now, when I handed over my app, he took a good look at it and started turning red. Then he looks at me as if I had just committed a crime and says, "I can't accept this. You can't just write "unemployed" on your application, DOT won't accept it. You'll have to account for your time!"

Well, I don't get it. Can't a guy just choose not to freaking work for a while if he has the means?

And also, does anyone know what king of employment verification/background checks these people do, and can I run one on myself to see what it shows?

Thanks for any replies. Great site and I'm going to be doing my homework.

Any time you are unemployed it has to be accounted for.

They usually ask for a reference other than a relative to verify that you were unemployed.

On my application I simply wrote down that my friends Nikki and Buddy who live in the small house next door could verify that I was unemployed for a certain period of time..

Little did the fools know...Nikki and Buddy were my 2 German Shepherds

    at the time :biggrin_2559:

I have always used my dogs as references..they can verify who i am and what i was doing during times of unemployment.

They generally take you word for most of it....they dont spend the money on anything other than your DMV and DAC reports

I think to make sure you're not hiding something like being locked up or getting into an accident and useing unemployment as a cover.

What? You thought you were running for political office?

The problem arises when DHS gets a look at your file.

They need to know if you had time to assemble a small thermo nuclear devise, or a large one.

And are just needing a delivery method.

It has to do with BIG BROTHER wanting to know where you have been and what you have been doing. The company is required to have a 10 year history to include all un-employed time and where you have lived. Any company that doesn't call your ref's and check it out is gambling with the Fed's. If they get a wild hair and decide to do an audit and check things out them selfs AFTER the company said they did. If it comes back as bogus the company is in BIG sticky stuff. I have had companies call my ref's and check.

Big Brother likes to know all about it's truckers and the 5 W's about you. Thats why you have a ECM on your engine. So they can find out what you have been doing. Same for QuallComms, Cell phone records, GPS records, road cameras, and anything else they can think of.

You think EOBR are for your safety.OR the publics. WRONG, it's just one more way Big Brother can keep track of you. So when you screw up they can hang you. Thats why I only run legal.

For every single job I've ever applied for, even non-trucking jobs, I've been asked to account for any time frame I wasn't working.

Usually, the time was taken off for maternity leave...I'd be off work anywhere from 6 months, to 2 years.

I finally started putting this down, for the time I was "unemployed"..

"President, and CEO of the Homefront
Responsibilities included organizational skills, budgeting, menu planning, trip-planning, personal buyer, and light industrial cleaning."

Most would read that, ask what it meant, laugh, stop asking stupid questions, and tell me I had the job! LOL
