THERE IS MANY REASONS THAT I WOULD NEVER CONSIDER SWIFT IMO.....
THEY HAVE HAD AN LOT OF DRIVERS GET THEIR CDL'S TAKEN AWAY FOR ILLEGAL PRACTICES IN THEIR TRAINEE PROGRAM MANY YEARS AFTER THEY ILLEGALLY GOT THEIR CDL'S HANDED TO THEM THRU SWIFT.... AND THIS INFORMATION IS WELL DOCUMENTED IN OTHER SITES AS WELL AS THE TRUCKERS REPORT ....
IMO.... STAY AWAY
Big company training and big scams associated with them !!!

Cactusjack,
Are you presently employed by a trucking company? Just kinda curious. Thanks -
The newbies also need to be aware that it is not JUST the "major" companies that will screw the hell out of you. When I was in driver's school, through a state run applied technical college, I was pre-hired by a father son operation. If my memory serves, they had about 40 trucks...
I took one short trip with an "experienced" (read that old alcoholic) driver. A very short trip, from St. George up to Sugar City ID and back. Then I was cut loose on my own. Talk about having to learn the hard way...
I probably made just about every mistake a driver can make, with the exception of forgetting to keep the dirty side down, and the shiny side up!
They made me buy my own load locks, from them, and charged about 60% more than you would pay for them in a truck stop. Being a rookie, I did not know this, I had to buy them before they would hire me. They had no qualcom, and this was before cell phones were so popular. But they provided "phone cards," at what I later found out was an exorbitant rate...
I was due to drop a loaded trailer at their drop yard in Denver one time. When I got there, the security guard told me I needed to call my dispatch. I made the call, and they asked me, very nicely, if I would "do them a favor." It seems that the local driver who was scheduled to meet me and deliver that LTL load had called in "sick." Would I PLEASE go ahead and make those deliveries. Even though I was dead tired, and out of hours. It was eleven drops.
Like an idiot, I agreed to do it for them. Well, I got the deliveries done, and got by without getting busted for it.
But then when payday came, I found that they did not even pay me the normal "drop & pick" fee, that their manual stated they paid. They did not pay me an hourly, for the work. They didn't pay me ANYTHING for it.
I called it to the attention of the bookkeeper, and was told that I needed to see the owner's son about this. He had instructed her to withhold the pay.
So I finally got in to see him. He told me, "we aren't gonna pay you for that, because there was one delivery that you did not make on time."
By this time, I had more than enough of this outfit and quit on the spot. I'm happy to report that this outfit, Farmer's Distributing, out of St. George went out of business a few years later...
I'm just posting this as a reminder that not every chickenschidt company is one of the majors...surf_avenue, big wheels, kickin chicken and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks Big Don,
For sure i will be getting around to the smaller carriers and i do appreciate any helping hand and experiences that any experienced drivers can share about any company.
I thought i would get the big companies out of the way first and then go small....
I totally agree there is an lot of smaller companies that are bad out there and as you pointed out usually the small ones that have bad practices seems to fade away once they are caught up in their b.s.. -
It's my understanding that the outfit I was talking about had been a good company to work for, before the owner's son came on board. Sound familiar?
cactusjack Thanks this. -
I do not know much about if they do have an training program ....
I have heard stories like this over and over again about this company.
I personally would not give them the time of day.bojo and big wheels Thank this. -
Either that or dad was an trucker and turned it into an small company everyone was happy until junior graduated college and dad decided to give him an job.
But then again i believe in the old school. -
So where does a newb go for training in your opinion? And once obtaining that CDL, most smaller companies insurance preclude new drivers with less than 2 or 3 years driving for them. Where are they supposed to get that experience?big wheels Thanks this.
