Yesterday Morning I started my shift at 6am, I work a 2-2-3 shift 6am to 6pm and one of my drivers who was taking her break at the Loves Truckstop on I-80 in Mifflinville, Pa she had started her break at 8:00 pm on 2-7 and her break was over at 6am yesterday morning. as i was going through my board and getting updates on all my drivers, a call from a PA State Trooper comes in saying my driver had been killed as a result of a hit n run. she had been walking from her truck to the truckstop. I didnt get alot of details from the trooper. The truckstop mgr said the truck hit her and never stopped. she had a little dog and she was in the middle of a load to laredo.
I was totally speechless, this is the first time something like this has happened with me, there has been other DM'S that have had fatality accidents with their drivers, and i did often wonder if one of my drivers was to die how would I handle this. I did try to best to be as professional as possible but this driver was a good friend, I had met her countless times and she never complained. even if there was something that wasnt her fault she would just say "see what you can do" once she was sittting at a pickup because the load wasnt ready for 3 days, not a word from her. everyone at celadon knew her because she has been a driver for 15 years or so. she started out with her husband as a team and he had a heart attack on the road several years ago and died.so she decided to keep doing the thing she really loved and that was trucking. i just cant imagine how this could have happened. and that another truck hit her and didnt stop. I will truly miss her, as Driver Managers we do develop freindships with drivers and we treat them just like family. I have looked for some info about this accident on the web but i cannot find anything at all. This Driver was a runner and she loved Driving all over the world. she definitely didnt deserve this, such a horrible tragedy. You just never know from day to day what is going to happen.
I must admit it was tough walking over to the planner and telling him that my driver had passed away.
Good Bye Dear Friend
