My boyfriend has been considering going to trucking school, and we have been researching a bit. From what I understand, he would most likely have to be travel a lot the first year or so while he gains experience. Eventually, we would hope he could get something regional or local, so he could be home more. We've been together for almost 9 years, and we're wanting to get married soon. I have read where some wives ride along with their husbands (not as a driver). We have no children and a great relationship, so I'm now really interested in the idea of being able to ride along with him, if he's going to be away a lot. My question is - do all companies allow wives to ride along? I was just wondering how to go about it. I think I would be a little disappointed now if I had to stay behind.

Sorry if I sound silly. We're just looking at the pros and cons right now.

    Thank you!

Riding along is common, but you getting your CDL and doing some driving, too, is the smart thing to do. I see a lot more successful husband/wife teams than anything else, since they don't have to deal with one another the whole day.

At some point in the distant past. An insurance executive actually figured out. That a Driver of a Tractor Trailer is less likely to crash if a family member is with them.

My wife has no interest in getting her CDL, and I have no interest in teaming with her (or anyone else for that matter, can't sleep while moving) but she does ride along from time to time. I think it's great for the relationship, if nothing else when you're at home on the other end of the phone you will at least understand what he's going through out there. Various companies will have different policies on having a passenger so if it's important to you then make sure it's one of the questions he asks before signing on the dotted line. At my company I pay $28/month for my wife to ride along, that covers any portion of or the entire month. That money makes her a covered passenger in the event of a crash or something where she has medical bills from it. That price however doesn't include her in workmans comp so if she were to slip and fall getting into the truck she will not be covered by insurance. Like I said different companies will have different policies, different prices, and different insurance coverages for a passenger so make sure you ask about everything and enjoy the ride.

That's how we ended up with kids! Lol

but check with the company your BF applies to. Results vary from outfit to outfit.

some places just need a permission slip, other places make you "purchase" rider insurance. (Deducted from your paycheck about $19/mo. )

I have yet to take a friend along but have had a few ask me to. Including a few lady friends. They think it would be cool. I always tell them that riding gets old quick. When we go by a great place to visit like Chicago or Dallas or KC we arent going to have time to stop and hang out. Also I warn them about the night runs I frequently do. If they don't want to sit up with me and try to sack out they're going to be tossed around in the sleeper bunk.

This soundsreally familiar. I said the same thing that my wife and I have a great realtionship. Two years later there isnt a day that goes by that we arent screaming divorce. Most of the times its just kidding around, but in all seriousness keep in mind there is no where for you to go when u get mad at him or he gets mad at you. My wife and I love to be together but there are times we need our own time. At home that means she is in living room doing netflox and Im in the man cave listening to music and playing on the computer or fishing. Good luck.
