I'm a line haul driver now but, My first trucking job some 16yrs. ago was with Builders Transport. So as a newbie in the trucking business flatbedding was very much a trial by fire type endeavor! I learned everything as I went, (load securement, different driving for different loads etc...) There were times when I scared myself to death, other times when I couldn't have been more proud of myself.
I very much enjoyed the many challenges of flatbedding and I feel very strongly that it made me a better and more concientous driver. As long as you have the right head about you, and respect what you are doing and especially pay attention to detail, I think you'll find it to be a pretty cool job.

Butterbean,
I'm happy to give you honest answers (good and bad) about anything having to do with McElroy as far as I am able. Keep in mind, however, that I am based out of the Pleasant Hill, NC terminal, so I know very little about the typical runs that drivers based out of the TN or TX or AL terminals usually get except by word of mouth from fellow company drivers. Although I am home now for the holiday, I usually can't check these forums until the weekends. If you prefer, you can PM me but once again, I cannot usually reply until the weekend.
My school had like 8 recruiters come and talk. The recruiter for McElroy wasn't the most impressive by far, but when the rubber hits the road, McElroy has been everything they said they would be to me - better starting pay than van companies, home every weekend, decent and comfortable truck, good health insurance, etc...etc...

If i can work for the military for 15 years how come i cannot find a civilian job driving
