I dunno..The toughest time I ever had was a reefer load I did for a "friend" about 7yrs ago. My Gawd. The HORROR..:biggrin_2556: When someone finds what "works for em" stick with it-WTH it all is important. I still think it's funny though when a dry-box guy asked me if I needed help tarping a lumber load in the wind an rain in Portland,OR last year..As he was standing under an umbrella..(Still wish) I would have said yeah..'C'mon up heah'..:biggrin_255:

He was expecting for Melton to hold his hand and Melton was expecting him to be tougher. Well, why didn't the Melton drivers "respect" him? My guess is that they could tell that he wouldn't be there long. What's the point of trying to be nice and helpful when the person you're trying to help is not even going to make a month? You got a driver who's expecting a lot but only willing to give a little. Don't work that way, amigo.

What is the "smith system of driver training"? And why do you think Melton forgot it? Not everyone, or every company follows every system. And for good or bad, some places even have their own "system".

Some dude named Harold Smith developed a driving system. Basically the 5 keys of safe driving.
    Aim high in steering
    Get the big picture
    Keep your eyes moving
    Leave yourself an out
    Make sure they see you
    A.G.K.L.M.........All good kids love milk!

I was driving using the smith system before some trucking company ever told me what the smith system was. What ever happened to pay attention to what you are doing driver? If you feel Melton is a bad company because you didnt get your smith system training please surrender your CDL and start taking the bus because I don't want to be on a highway with you. As for flat bed specific training, for a green pea like yourself I can certainly understand why you would want some additional time spent training and building your confidence. However, as somebody that has done flatbed, if you have any common sense at all a lot of the lessons you need to learn you can figure out for yourself along the way. After reading your post maybe driving isn't for you. Maybe you should try a government job where common sense, enthusiasm, and desire to succeed are not a requirement and generally frowned upon.

Tarping/untarping in the rain and snow isnt for everyone and sorry it didnt work out for you. Let me get this straight though, you have been driving for 20 years and one of the things you didnt like about them is they didnt go over the Smith system? I would think that would be second nature by now.
