Per diem is monies given by the IRS for every DAY you spend away from your domicile (home). It's now at $59.00 a DAY!
Per diem pay by Bottom Feeder Inc. (see disclaimer at bottom of page) isn't even CLOSE to what the government gives you credit for! It is BEST known as "The 3 Martini lunch tax!" The one Mr Clinton took away thinking 3 million plus truck drivers were eating high on the hog and charging Uncle Sam for! Gee thanks Libtards but after a fight we got it back but it's still getting back to where it's fair! But a piddling $59 a day comes no where close to what you pay for 3 over priced meals and if you have to a motel room but it sure helps!
Keep the log book and count the days or let your CPA count them.
They can average that piddling amount you were "PAID" and still get what you actually would have gotten from the IRS! And BOTTOM FEEDER INC. IS charging you WHAT for the PRIVILEGE of doing this "service" for you? A freaking excel page or simple math to figure out a miles times $.02 and they THINK this service is worth that freaking much to SCREW you? Come on BOTTOM FEEDER INC. and the rest of you morons all it takes is ONE more line of code that a SECRETARY or a truck driver using Excel can write to figure out how much the per diem you want so much to HELP screw your drivers with! It's simple 5th grade math and if you're doing this to "help" the ONLY people bringing in this money you're screwing them out of, you're dumber than a brain dead child molester!

Yes, someone did the "math" where it "looks" like you actually did better with them paying you maybe an extra $20-40 a week but if you are living pay check to pay check I guess you're in worse shape than I would ever want to be and I'm on disability right now!
    You're thinking wrong!
It's NOT what you have at the end of the week but at the end of the year and also at the end of your serviceable life!

The down side of this legal RIPOFF per Diem is:
Next week you hurt yourself and get paid by workers comp. BUT because BOTTOM FEEDER INC. took the PD out before taxes they paid LESS to taxes and Workers Comp pay is paid on your, wait for it......
    what you paid in TAXES!
OOPS you get LESS on Workers Comp! And here you are not working laid up and you have bills to pay but you so wanted that extra piddling $20 a week plus what they screwed you out of to figure it out!

    NEXT:
You get fired and you actually managed to show BOTTOM FEEDER INC. has to pay your unemployment. Well because you took that pathetic little extra money each week you will get LESS money on unemployment as it's paid on your...have you figured it out YET? Yep, your GROSS! OOPS screwed again!
    NEXT:
You go for a loan, oh say a small one for that new car bike or boat you've had your eye on and go in and fill out the paper work and put your gross you make and being young your credit score is not to high BUT you made that big $32,000 for BOTTOM FEEDER INC. but you got turned down because of your GROSS income! BUT? BUT! BUT, you drove the required 120,000 miles or whatever BOTTOM FEEDER INC. required of you so you SHOULD have made more than that? Right? Right! no WRONG AGAIN!
    NEXT:
You go in for a home loan and this same thing happens? OOPS or screwed again!
    NEXT and FINAL:
Here is a biggie: Social Security (if it's still there when you get to old to work!) Guess what SS is based on? Want to wait for it or should I go ahead? I'll go ahead! YOUR GROSS! Here BOTTOM FEEDER INC. so graciously "paid" you per diem so "YOU" would have more of "YOUR" money at the end of the week but the ONLY ONE with MORE of "YOUR" money at the end of the week is BOTTOM FEEDER INC.! WHY you might ask? Well, all that TAX money they DIDN"T have to pay on you! The SAME TAX that you'll rely on for when you get hurt on the job, the same for that unemployment, the same tax for your end of life expenses if you didn't get a GOOD CD or IRA (screw a 401K) and that money they say it costs them to do simple 5th grade math to what? Give you MORE money at the end of the week?

Other deductions you can take even if you drove for 1 day!
Safety shoes, it's an OSHA thing!
Uniforms ONLY if required by your company and YOU paid cash for them, NOT regular clothing!
    ink pens
    note pads
computer if used for your job
phone, broadband card and cell if used for your job
cleaning supplies to clean the company truck
fuel, oil, washer fluid, additives, tolls, faxes, copy costs, or anything the company should have paid for but didn't (keep copies of everything!) Don't give up a receipt that you paid your money on!

But, the Per Diem is the most important tax credit you have! Keep every log book page even computer generated as long as they have all your stop and over night information. As I said Bottom Feeder Inc. isn't paying you a FAIR PD and even some of these low life companies ARE ACTUALLY charging YOU FOR THIS? GIMMIE A BREAK! You're getting SCREWED out of YOUR money to GET money? Sounds like the RICO ACT should be brought into this equation! This is scum stealing from you and trying to make it look legal! Plus they give you the option to opt out or a few of them do. Others, it's take it or hit the road but not in OUR truck! Forced to take something thas GOOD for you??HMMMM...

HEY FBI or IRS want to look a little closer at this plan?
Pyramid Schemes have nothing on this scam!

And to you who think it's so good and think you show it with "the math" remember, EVERY THING looks good on paper but what matters is how it looks in the LONG RUN not whats in your wallet at the end of the week! Quit thinking SMALL!

    Good Luck,
    Rollover

PS: DISCLAIMER::The term BOTTOM FEEDER INC.is MY way to call ANY company who treats a driver like dirt and every one of you more than 20 truck trucking companies out there deserve the title BOTTOM FEEDER INC. unless you can prove to me and any other of us with more than a days experience that you are NOT a BOTTOM FEEDER INC.! I also authorize any other TTR member to use this phrase!

Let them try to sue those who have nothing because of BOTTOM FEEDER INC.s practices and I called them what they really are! Whats the saying? You can't get blood from a turnip? Go ahead and waste some more of that drivers hard earned money suing me for calling you what you have become! Where will the money come from? College educated morons! As a child we used to have a poem.....Stick and stones....Truth actually does hurt those who take offence doesn't it Bottom Feeder Inc? ROFLMAO!

How much "beans and hamburger" do you suspect they will be eating if they get injured and need workers comp, or get laid off and use their unemployment?
This per diem "program" offered by companies also lowers the payments to Social Security and amount of employer contributed taxes paid to the Government every year.

People need to realize that while Companies "pump-up" the benefits toe driver will get from this program, the truth is, there are NO real advantages to the per diem programs..........except to the trucking companies themselves.

O.K. if your happy but lets get some facts straight about perdiem:

    1. If your 48 or over and work on a perdiem plan you can have your social security reduced by more than a 3rd because your in that window of quarters worked that matter when benifit is calculated. Your also running the risk of your childrens benfit being reduced if you die before they are 18. If your spouse stays home with the kids and takes care of the home your lowering her benifit as well.

    2. Your workmans comp benifit is based on your wages not you perdiem so if your hurt on the job your payment will be less than your co-driver.

    3. By taking perdiem your agreeing not to claim any road expenses on your taxes. You may have gotten away claiming them on your taxes in the past, several drivers I know have, but the IRS has added 10,000 new fraud agents to collect on tax cheats and perform aduits over the last 1.5 years. I expect many drivers to get busted on this.

    4. At the end of the year you Co-Driver is going to get to claim the road expenses you can't and will get a nice refund. Consider that the refund spread out over 52 weeks will make their paychecks just as big without reducing old age and accident benifits.

    5. No one but the company wins on perdiem because they have to match dollar for dollar you payroll tax, if you not paying but 2/3rd of that on yourself you company saves by not having to match. You lose because your social security will be smaller. Also the company saves bundles on workmans comp payments and payments made tounemployment in case you ever get laid off. You only get unemployment on your wages earned not you perdiem. Also when you go to buy life insurance based on your yearly wage as many companies sale in whole life plans you can't claim perdiem.

    6. Your taking a pay cut to be on it. 3.25% to be exact on the Werner plan. You will get the tax break weekly or yearly with or without the Werner plan. Your are paid less than your Co-Driver doing the same job and don't even realize it.

If the company actually puts money in your hand and you spend it and return receipts for this kind of per diem you are correct. You can not file per diem when it's done this way which is the same way the Military does it. I also drove for a company that put $300 cash in my hand on Monday before I went on my route and returned receipts for my food, motels and yes a bar tab if I so used it on Friday when I returned! As long as I had the receipts that the company could use, it was all well and done.

That was the only 2 years that I didn't file on my taxes my days out but I was audited 3 years later when I started to file again as it raised a "flag" or two!

Audits are NOT fun! Been there and don't recommend them for a fun time! I guess that's why you don't see their phone number on the bathroom walls under "Looking for a good time?" but you do find them under "Looking for a good screwing?"

The Per Diem that these Bottom Feeder Inc. companies does, is not the type of Per Diem we are discussing. But I will check with IRS on Monday to be absolutely certain we have correct information here!.

It does not sound correct as you are allowed the $59. a day and not being able to collect on the full tax benefit can't be right. If so then you are royally getting bent!

As it was explained to me by my CPA, They (the CPA) can take the piddling amount that this Bottom Feeder Inc company pays and deduct it from the IRS amount that for this year was the $59. and you get the balance as a deduction, but again I will back this up with a call to the IRS 800 no information line! LOL Yep it'll take several calls to that number and then I'll have to average the different answers to come up with a "correct" answer! Been there and done that with the IRS! I can tell you that if your CPA charges you per page or IRS form they have to fill out then take a guess about what I'm about to bring up...got it yet? OK you now get to pay MORE of your hard earned money for your CPA to fill out the page telling the IRS you were paid for a miledge Per Diem but did not receive the full amount and this is a correction sheet that tells the IRS what they owe you. My CPA charges me $60 a page! I'll even try to get the publication number for that page when I call.

We'll have all the information nailed down as we still have 6 months before tax time! But hopefully we'll have it correct before anyone else looses some of their hard earned money way before that!

    Good luck

I have to ask as this IS a WernerThread and I want to do a few "numbers or math" to figure something out so here goes.

How many trucks does Werner have?
How much does Werner charge you for this oh so wonderful program per mile?
What are the AVERAGE miles a Werner driver might get to do in a pay period?
Do you think Leathers is getting a little worried if he is following this thread?
Am I getting any laughs from my attempts at being a comedian as I need work!
And I wonder if there is anything for a sit down comedian as thats the only way I know how to work after 32 years of sitting on my butt driving! Stand up sounds like to much work!

Your first lack of judgement was going to work for Werner. your second was making this statement. Take a deep breath while holding s spoon full of horseradish under your nose and maybe your judgement will improve.:biggrin_255:

They claim to have 7000 trucks if im thinking of the right company. However, they have thousands just sitting around idle, so no one really knows how many are running......

The charge is 1 cent per mile.

There are no average miles, i got anywhere betwen 1500 to 3500 a week, literally.

Yes, I think Leathers is getting worried.

    Yes, I'm laughing.

They have bar stools, since its ok for Ron White to act like he's drinking and smoking when he works, I can't see how a bar stool wouldnt fit in?

Anyhow, 7000 trucks...1 cent per mile....1000 miles per week... that alone is $700,000...and thats just on the 1 cent thing... But i think werner has a LOT of drivers that know better. I've talked to maaaany werner drivers who knew the facts about per diem... so realistically, i suspect at the most they only have 6000 trucks on per diem.

Don't forget about teams though...so they probably have around 8000 drivers on per diem....

Atleast werner doesnt force per diem though. CRST forced it, and charged 3 cpm for it, and then paid 10 cents as the per diem...which i suspect is not even legal when someone is making 22 CPM.....i was getting paid more per diem than pay. Western Express also forces it.

I go tanker yanking tomorrow. Training in Joliet Monday thru thursday, haul arse to gary for orientation and to start the job. I don't even recall them ever bringing up per diem, to be honest. And hell no, i won't take it! I didn't even take it at Werner. Werner showed us a video about it in orientation, and even explained about the 1 cent per mile charge for it...and you could tell they were lying through their teeth. I mean, come on, the savings for them giving it to you in the first place are substantail and pretty obvious if you think about it...
