First post. I think this site is great. Most all of yous guys have great advice to offer, DFO & Sadwar to name just a few. I have about 3 months OTR, so maybe I'm a somewhat experienced rookie. Still, I have a million questions. Mostly about orientation to start with. What to bring?
    Clothes for 2 weeks?
    Gloves and flashlight. Sleeping bag.
And somewhere on these threads I saw, reflective vest.
    All personal hygene stuff.
They will sell me their boots, I've read.
Laptop? Or can I get away with a smartphone for now?
Being as I live in Fl, is there a way, I can choose where I run? From what I've been reading, hopefully not the dreaded northeast to start out.
Is there any way to know how and when I get paid? I know I'll have to have to buy CB, Nav gear, cooler, and other stuff for my truck.
About me. I've been in the electronic repair (tv, vcr, dvd, and most all comsumer electronics) business for 40 years, but that occupation has become obsolete.
So here I go, going where the Lord leads me. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Probably half a million questions to go.

I have to agree, these guys have some great advice to offer. SNI will give you a Safety vest. The shoes are $35.00 if you purchase. Taken from first check. After that, SNI will give you a free pair of boots every year.

If you choose 48, you will run everyplace.

You can get away with a smartphone. The CBT's will have to be done by start of week 3. They can be done at the OC. In Fontana CA, the hotel's wireless would not connect to Crossroads (Schneider web page), so we had to do all CBT's at the OC. You will learn more about Crossroads in class. About 8 hours of computer watching. Yawn.

The OC (Operating Center) will be the nearest on too where you live. For example, some of my classmates were from Denver, they will be based out of Fontana.

You will need at least 7 days of clothes. You can wash your clothes at the OC at no charge. If you have a sleeping bag, no sheets/covers are needed. All your hygiene stuff you need.

The only down time you may have is waiting for your TE. You will have some home work to do. Not every night.

My only advice is to pay attention in class. They throw a lot at you in a short amount of time.

This is my 1st week on the road. Learning everyday.

    Best of luck

Thanks guys. A few more questions. I've read a backpack would be good for walking around with books and stuff while in orientation? Suggestions on whether to run 48 or not kind sirs. If not, how close could I stay to Atlanta/Florida? It would be nice to get home with my truck to put personal stuff and tools asap before becoming a road warrior. I hope these questions aren't too dopey. Just trying to get the straight scoop. My recuiter seems to be a good guy, but...? I live about 20 miles away from Wildwood, on I75, and he told me I would be allowed to drive my truck home. Seems too good to be true. That's why I'm counting on you guys to tell it to me straight.
Softail, being a month apart in a new career, I'll be reading your posts with great anticipation. Again, thanks.

You'll be able to take your truck home, the closest OC to you is in Atlanta. There is a drop yard in Orlando, but that's still too far

Can I ask you, since I am going to Cora on Monday, I think you work for Schneider. Do I really need to bring my sleeping bag now or should I wait to get my own truck? I just dont know what I need that for if I will be sleeping on a bunk bed. Please let me know. Also are low cut steel toe boots okay, or I need the long one's.

They also said no shorts, what I about when I am sleeping I don't like wearing long pants to sleep.

    Thanks.

The sleeping bag is for when you go out with the TE. He may not have linen for you. From what I've been reading about the boots, Schneider will reject just about everything but the ones they want to sell. So if it is $20 or $35 out of your first check, make 'em happy. Buy theirs. Also, I don't think a TE will mind if you wear shorts to sleep in. Who in the world sleeps in long pants?
