I'm guessing Dollar General. What you failed to see was you werent necessarily going to make your starting rate for long. There IS something be said for home DAILY. I did regional OTR for 6 months , made the jump to a dedicated(great one for the pay) account with multi stop driver unload for 1 1/2 years befroe I switched accounts to a single out and back home daily making great money in a day cab.
I had to be patient to get the minimum time in to make the switch. And in the process made terrible money. But I learned a lot ( much of it the hard way) but still those lessons have served me well.
You didnt say how long you "tried" to do this job. My opinion, shoulda hung tough til something else popped.mickimause Thanks this. -
You were a new driver, right? Did you think you would start out with top pay? -
The one argument that doesn't make any sense is the "you'd be better off flipping burgers" commentary. That doesn't even make any sense. Granted, you can move up to management after however long you put in, but these fast food joints won't give anyone more than 25 hours a week. So yeah, I'm sure making $200/week in 25 hours and then sitting on your ### doing nothing is better than moving up in the trucking industry. If you're a slacker that can't handle the long hours of trucking you picked the wrong profession.
mickimause and hawkjr Thank this. -
New drivers need to learn an OTR driving job is a Lifestyle not just a job.
Drifter42, mickimause, Dreamshadow and 1 other person Thank this. -
Most people in entry level jobs work 2-3 jobs just to pay the bills, because...as you said...few part-time employers give more than 25 hours a week. Do the math...putting in 60+ hours a week for most OTR and entry level dedicated routes...you're essentially working for minimum wage.
That and "moving up in the trucking industry?" Lol. Please. Most companies (i.e. This exact scenario and company) are specifically hiring people because they have no other option starting out or they aren't bright enough to do the math and see that they're going to get ****** over. How much upward mobility is going to be associated with a position like that? -
And what he means by moving up in the trucking industry is gaining experience & applying for the better jobs other trucking companies have to offer. Better pay, better benefits, better equipment & majority of the time a better atmosphere.
You don't have to be a 30 CPM, driving a slow stripped down truck for your whole career, but if you show job hopping & poor work history then that's exactly what your gonna be. -
The problem with this op's original post as with the country in general is that no one wants to EARN their pay or seniority they want it given to them. If your not smart enough to make a decision you can live with from the beginning and then want to blame someone else then you'll always EARN what your worth............very little
mickimause Thanks this. -
It was always funny when they had an accident and wined that their parents wouldn't buy them a new one. It was only funny because when I had my first (and only) accident, I spent 20$ at a pick-a-part and fixed my old one myself. ...but I digress.
It's unfortunate that nobody wants to do the work anymore. I'm teaching this to my cousins now, and I'll teach it to my kids when I have some. Work hard. Own yourself with what you do. Have and show respect. And lastly, keep it closed. (Some of these have multiple applications.)
I suppose it's a matter of need. When you don't need to work for what you have, you come to expect it'll be easy or handed to you. Over my short lifespan, I have learned everything I am able. I still do keep learning. It keeps me sharp, but you'd be surprised by how many times those skills are needed by someone in a crunch.
...TennMann, move over. You're taking up too much room on the soap box.Dreamshadow, 30-aught-6 and mickimause Thank this. -
Welcome to the new age of entitlement! I'm old school for sure, never
once called My kids to dinner, if they weren't around when it was
time then SOL. Plus time in the Corps hasn't helped my demeanor
with the youth, we had blanket parties to weed out the slackers.😊mickimause Thanks this.
