You're going to one of the "fun" docks

So you're goin' to Hunt's Point Market. Enjoy it. You should bring a camera along and take pictures. This is because you may NEVER go back there. Most guys who go swear off that place and vow to quit driving before returning. I didn't find it that bad when I went, but it isn't my FAVORITE place, either.

Some advice. Depending on how you're coming in, I'd stop at a truck stop fairly near NYC and ask for directions via your CB. You may even be able to find those dirs on the internet. Just make sure any internet directions are aimed at TRUCKS. Who knows....you may find somebody in that truckstop who's been to HPM before and is going as well. You could follow him in. I'm sure you already know that you'll be going down NYC streets. Be extra careful on those. Don't be intimidated if you look out your right door and see a garbage truck 6 inches from your mirror one lane over. It does get close in NYC, but stay straight ahead and you'll be just fine. Don't let those streets intimidate you whatever you do.

When I went to HPM, it was easy to get to, but a *************** to back into a dock there. Also, when I went back in 1998, I had to pay 20 bucks just to get into the place. Be sure to take some cash along. Also, while you're getting unloaded, you can walk around to different vendors and buy produce of all types to take back on the road with you.

There is a cafe in Hunt's Point that offers some fairly decent food and a hot waitress or two as well. At least this describes the cafe I saw in 1998.

I had no trouble getting unloaded. A crew came right on time and unloaded my 22 pallets of produce in no time. No lumper fees, no counting, no BS.

Believe it or not, and I KNOW I'll get called on this, I got to HPM about 15 hours early and spent the night there. Yeap--I am one of the few people who has spent a night in HPM. I had no trouble, either. The place is fenced-in, and it helped (my nerves if nothing else) that I had my 9mm M-TEC on board with 10 rounds of lead-poisoning. I don't advocate anyone carry a gun on a rig, but I myself always had a weapon of some kind on my truck, and if I were going to NYC or another big city, that weapon was of the 9mm variety.

You'll never see this guy be another Reginald Denny. At least not without a hell of a fight.

Have fun on this trip. You should be fine. You'll see signs into and out of there that will guide you along.

Yeah I drive a Swift truck
And that means one thing
It means she's slow
It's a typical company truck
It's just all show and no go

I'm gettin' passed by Yella
And even Overnite
I'm gettin' passed by ever' body in sight
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

No, my hometown's nowhere in sight
And if you think I'm pissed off
You're right
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

Love pissing off those trucking company insiders.

Re: Hunts Point Coop, Bronx. Advice>..

My hubby does the east coast all the time and NYC is no big deal, use mapquest to get directions (we use it all the time with no problems) and dont let the other drivers bully you. Of course you will be nervous but dont let it get the best of ya, enjoy the view from the George!(if you go in that way) When you get done come back and post to let us know how it went.

When I was in Hunts Point, I could have sworn I was in the slums in Cd. Juarez, Mexico.

I have spent the night at HPC (AND just outside) numerous times, as well as other places in NYC. I never had a problem. My trucking companion kept the lizzards off my truck. Nothing works better than a 120 lb big black dog. Sometimes, I would even roll the window down a few inches just to see the expression on the faces of my "visitors" when my dog stuck her head out the window (for taste-testing).

Do not use Mapquest into HPM you will end up on the wrong streets. Learned this the hard way when I pulled reefer. HPM is a special place that anyone who has been there will tell you SUCKS!!!!!!!!!

I use mapquest from time to time to and it is great, but I know for a fact not to use it to get to HPM.

Any chance that after she learns basic behavior and manners she might pass the learning on to you?
