I am a student at US Trucking school in Denver. One of my top considerations for the company i'd like to work for is Swift. I just have a question regarding home time.

I have a son that lives in Windham, Connecticutt. Can I take my hometime there? Even though my residence is in Denver, CO? If I can take hometime in CT, where do I park truck? Or can I take it home if there is room?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Scott

You can take home time anywhere you want. Just enter the zip code into the proper macro on the quallcom. In Connecticut you park where you can I suppose.

I have family in MN, Denver and the Sacramento area.
I rotate my home times each month to see them all.

As to where to park, it helps if you don't have a trailer.
A lone tractor is much easier to park.
And CT doesn't have many truck stops where you can park your rig.
Nor that many loads, so it may be hard just getting there - not to mention back out again.

Swift will try to get you where ever you want for home time, but don't expect miracles.
They can only get you where the freight is running.
So don't expect to be there on the date you request, especially if you are going way out of the way.

I think if Swift can get you with in 50 miles of where you want to take home time, they'll let you go home. I almost always had trouble getting home to Wichita, KS. Most times, I'd end up driving the truck home from Eddy'sville terminal (3 hours drive). Other times, they try to get me as close to home as possible with loads. Or, I'd get stuck in Ardmore, OK waiting a day or 2 for a load to Eddy'sville then I could go home. For Wichita being the size it is, I have a difficult time believing Swift can't get freight to/from there.

Most times, they would send me to Olathe to the Wal-Mart distro to drop and hook. That's as close as they could get me most times. I did BT out once to get an MT from a lot in Wichita; however, there weren't any trailers there; so, I got to go home with my DM saying, "Oh". This next time around, I'm leaving my car at the term. I don't have the same living conditions now as I did then. Was nice, being able to park right next to my mobile home.

I bobtailed home less than 50 miles to do my 34 reset and see my family, terminal manager I cant do it again because its not a "secure" area... where I had it parked is more secure than half the places they consider secure

I was 93 miles from home, but it broke the 90 mile limit. So I had to wait for a load that was within the limit.
Oh, well. But it seems to me that we could be cut a little slack.

Slack in areas that are considered unsecure?
    Not so sure.
These few areas are where trucks are most often stolen. Like anywhere near San Diego.
You park it and go to home time, then come back a day or two later to find your truck gone.

I consider my home time to be worth a few extra bucks in fuel - but not the whole truck.

Swift HAS to protect its assets, even if it means some inconvenience to the drivers.

If you know you are going into an area that is not secure, you need to make the arrangements to park in a Swift approved lot and be picked up and dropped off.
