I've gone well over the 70 hour clock, running into deficits up to -25 hours or so with some trainees before they were qualified by me to run as a team. You can legally work over 70 hours as long as you aren't driving. The deficits were because at times early in training we had schedules that required super solo (I drove for several hours with the trainee in the sleeper berth and then sat in the passenger seat as they drove a full shift). Once the 70 hours are up then we are forced to drive solo only and are routed accordingly. It just seems that early in training the planners sometimes throw loads on us that require super solo, like running 800 miles in 24 hours on a JIT load.
As far as expectation to run as a team, one thing that was emphasized during my mentor orientation is that we have total control whether to qualify a trainee to run as a team. It's totally up to us. 50 hours behind the wheel is the MINIMUM requirement to qualify a trainee to run as a team.
I can see that there is a financial motivation to qualify a trainee to run team as soon as 50 hours is up in order to gain those extra dollars. However, I strongly bear in mind that every trainee is different and my own safety, let alone the safety of the trainee and everyone around us, is absolutely paramount. I still make decent money during super solo phase.
What do mentors make ?

Still, they push you to run the max miles possible.
That really should not be the case when training someone, don't you think? -
It really depends on freight. I always like to take a 34 after upgrading a trainee to team so we both have a fresh 70. However, with my last trainee we took an additional two 34 resets waiting for freight. There's always some kind of down time when OTR teaming.
The issue is really during solo phase, when they put loads that require super single to complete on time. These are loads that aren't long enough for a true team, and too long for a solo to get there. Usually it seems we get a few of these early in the solo training phase, then as the mentor runs out of 70 those go away. -
They are not supposed to be doing that for the first 50 hours.

NY state is a nice place to be, until you want to find a place to park.
As it is with much of the north east part of the country.
Heck, anywhere in the eastern 1/4 sucks for parking after dark.
And it's not like there is not enough room for more truck stops.
There are miles between exits, and all it would take is another exit or two with a truck stop.
It's not like the need is not there.
Which makes me wonder why there are not more truck stops in the most congested part of the country.
Is it taxes or something?
Because there is always more of a need for truck stops and parking in that part of the country.
They, the PEOPLE, want their products and goods - but why won't they let us have places to park and eat?DocWatson Thanks this. -
Local politicians , E.P.A all make it dificult to open new truck stops. Mom and pop truck stops are a thing of the past, only the the big corporate companies Pilot , Loves etc.. Have pockets deep enough to pay off the government to open new truck stops.
