Thank you very much for the information! I am going to go ahead and schedule my DOT physical.
As far as paperwork, as far as I understand for the Memphis terminal you need the following:
CDL A permit (interstate, not intrastate)
SS card
Birth Certificate
Dot medical card
Normal Drivers license from home state(?)
Any other known issues with paperwork? I'm doing my best to be as thorough as possible.
Thank you so much for your help everybody!

Other than an accurate work history for the past 10 years, and/or supporting documents verifying any lapses thereof...

10 years is only if you're applying with experience from previous driving jobs. Otherwise it's more like 3-5 and you fill that out on the initial application to swift. You don't need it for the academy. Only your application and possibly swift orientation if/when you pass

I attended Millington/Memphis last September. Unless they changed requirements and that's possible, make sure your DOT medical was completed in the last 90 days AND by a physician on the national registry. As has already been stated make certain your class A call permit is not restricted to intrastate. Take your birth certificate, the long form of your medical and your actual ss card. The past ten years employment is needed only if you've driven commercially but be able to list last ten.
Just have the same documents when you get to orientation.
Don't be intimidated by the straight line backing. The instructors are very good in Millington.
Good luck to both of you. Don't stress and have fun. Be a sponge and open to learning. The instructors are a wealth of knowledge. Even when you don't agree with the methods remain patient you'll see the value of their methods.blue42 Thanks this. -

Today was awesome! It was my first day driving. We did straight backing...I only killed 2 cones!!! One on my first attempt--I kept looking in the wrong mirror. The other one after one of my training partners set the truck up all ####eyed in the lane. I was getting a little TOO confident and thought I could correct the problem without pulling up. I was not correct. I learned my lesson.
Backing was a blast. The instructors are awesome. They've seen every mistake out there. They know what you're doing wrong and they will fix you up in no time--IF you are willing and able to LISTEN. We have a couple of guys in our class who have a hard time taking/following directions. Being anywhere near their truck is , reportedly, pretty terrifying.
All the guys in class keep asking who is doing better...me or my guy. I'm happy to report--he's doing *slightly* better than me...BUT...I'm not so far behind that I feel even the slightest little bit bad.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Do you know how it works if you don't have the money to stay in the hotel? How do they work it out so that you pay them back?
