Pipe wrenches will leave marks, no matter what you try not to leave them.
That would probably be for 2 inch line, maybe smaller. I worked in a dairy in a former life, unloading(called intake) and washing the tanks, sometimes by hand. I don't think we had any of those special wrenches that small, but even if we had, they only used them on the straight trucks so I didn't touch those.
You can use a strap wrench in a pinch as long as it hasn't been overtightened. -
if your worried about marks.and a fine looking finish for the next 100 years. use a rag. works every time.
doesn't seem to bother anyone else. certainly not the fire dept. and they got BIG valves.
I've seen plumbers use rags though -
