(Don't worry my post will never be this long again)
I've been lurking on here for a month or so, and all i can say is.... The WEALTH of info on here is AMAZING.
From what i've read on here im probably what some of you would call a "steering wheel holder"
Little backround: Worked for a very large moving company for over a decade (on the O&I side not HHG) and finally decided to get my "A" some years back.... taught myself how to drive, playing around in our yard after everyone else went home for the day....... payed my own dmv fees (company would have paid, but i wanted to do it on my own without anyone knowing), and had my permit all of 2 weeks (would have been 1 week but the KW i took to the drive test decided to burst a lower radiator hose in the parking lot, the minute i pulled in) took all 8 test the same day (M1,T,X,A stuff, and of course the #### "C" test again)
Im more or less a local company guy that usually drives anything from a 12' packer, to a 48' box.... I learned on a 27' pup though, my first day with my permit, my coworker pulled over the 48' we were in right after getting off the bay bridge in SF on a friday evening (530pm) and said "here its all yours, if you can drive here in downtown in rushhour traffic, you can drive anywhere" after my threats to him werent working (i was scared to death, and didnt wanna drive) i got in and got us to our destination, and never looked back.
My new found respect for truckers came only after having to take a loaded 48' from oakland to oceanside ca (socal).... all I will say (since i made this pretty long already) is that it takes a certain type to be a REAL OTR guy/gal... i have NOTHING but the UTMOST respect for you men/women....
Before anyone ask.... NO i really dont know how to log, and yes i consider myself lucky to have made that above mentioned trip 3 or 4 times with not knowing the right way to log.
Im currently out of trucking until Dec due to a bad choice I made, but cant count the days fast enough before i can get back in the saddle again..... Im "hoping" to be able to finally use my tanker endorsement come dec... but might have to settle for going back to "where i came from" for a year or so.
Again this place is the best for anyone with a cdl or trying to get one! (dead serious about that!)
Hello.. (If I found this place YEARS ago, i could have avoided the humble pie)

welcome to the forum, good luck on your return.
superpet39 Thanks this. -
Dont stress the logging . Read up on it. Remember your entire life is in 15 minute increments. Max 11 hours driving before you shut down for 10. Max 14hours (including driving) from the second you log on duty before you shut down.
You're right that trial by fire day is the day you become a trucker. Gluck mansuperpet39 Thanks this. -

Well i DO consider myself a trucker, i just think there's different categories of truckers, i wouldnt dare put myself in the same box as the guys and gals on here that drive OTR. I mean i used to think we were all the same...... until i tried going out for a day or two, resting in truck stops, getting redlighted at the scales, etc etc. Then I came on here, did a little digging, and found out.............. IM A STEERING WHEEL HOLDER LOL!
Cant wait to hold a steering wheel again, then hopefully yank a tankercdreid Thanks this. -
Nah man. When people say steering wheel holder it's not about what youve done its about whether youre a professional truc kdriver... or some dude they stuck in a drivers seat who can hold it in the lane going down the interestate
Lots of professional truckers out there only doing local. Heck check out what the coal haulers do in kentucky and virginia. Those boys drive some CRAZY little roads with a 100,000 pound trailer on back (im not kidding) . Or the log haulers taking their trucks down dirt roads with a tandem tire hanging in the air around every curve.

That's back when the mirrors shook like a leaf in the wind and having an NH250 under the hood, or a 6-71 Detroit was common, and most of the guys driving the trucks knew their trucks like they knew the backs of their hands and watching them back those things was just flipping amazing.
A little later in life, my life took me away to the city, and I discovered that most adults didn't know how to back even a little utility trailer... something I could do before I got my driver's license. Heck, I learned how to double clutch before I got my license. My first job ever had me driving a 50's dump truck with a vacuum powered two speed axle, and the guys were dumbstruck this kid knew how to use it.
To the OP: Be the consummate professional from now on, be not just good, but be the superlative you admire most. It means learning what you need to learn, overcoming whatever obstacles get in your way. Go get it.superpet39 Thanks this. -
You have NO idea ........I might get my CDL it's own pillow and blanket so I can sleep with it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT LOL..... I've never had a problem being a professional. But if there's a chance of me taking my professionalism up a notch.............I will! -
