    Hi,

After running a small successful business for the past 30 I'm looking to make some life changes and trucking is very interesting / intriguing. My kids are older and my wife is also considering the team driving idea - but not day one (she has a job that she likes - no reason to leave that). I live about 30 miles north of New York City (near I-95) which I understand is a good trucking location to be in.

I've been doing some research here and on other sites and I would love to have some feedback on some of my initial thoughts:

    1. Go to CDL school privately (i can swing that). I have heard Sage recommended many times.
    2. Plan on driving for a company for at least 1-2 years before considering any type of owner/operator opportunity.
    3. My business background could lend itself to OO, if I like what I'm going.
    4. I've looked at expediting - can get into that with a CDL B - is this worth doing as an option instead of CDL A?
    5. I'm a business man and look at the opportunity down the road. From what I can gather I'm seeing a net profit of roughly 40% from the gross revenue that an OO sees. If Fedex says the weekly revenue average for a team is $4,000 (plus fuel surcharge) count on seeing $1,600 as net profit (plus the FSC). Just want to understand the expected profit margins.

Got lots more to ask but will start with these. Appreciate any feedback - thanks again.

To somewhat answer #5....The most consistent thing in trucking is the inconsistency. Your quoting of the Fedex gig is very broad and to really take a look at it you would need to consider several variables. These variables can range from the type of engine and tires on the truck to the cost of fuel (uncontrollable). Does Fedex pay all miles or just loaded miles. These are three things to keep in mind over probably 300 you need to consider. There is very little money to be made in trucking. As a company driver wages range from 25k to 85k per year. As an O/O after all expenses are paid it's probably anywhere from 25k to 100k. Sure there are exceptions to these numbers but everyone from companies, shippers, brokers, state, federal and city regulators not to mention local, state and federal law enforcement all have their hands in the pie, your pie.

Look at the OOIDA website for the business end of trucking.
