I know when that happens on a detroit it is from compression getting past injectors into the fuel rail...

Im not familiar with isx but sure sounds like the same thing going on.

Reason it surges is compresion bubbles goes into fuel rail and the injectors down the line pick up the air and the engine will loose power or surge.

    AModelCat Thanks this.

I had a similar problem on my Detroit. Took filter out of Davco. Filter was black...grit like...not slimy. Bottom of the bowl was black specks and sludgy black stuff.
Also while driving I was having loss of power under acceleration and it would come right back.
Ended up I had a bad injector. Replaced and ran good. Also Davco filter doesn't get black anymore.

Fuel lines... get new ones on please.

Others are saying injectors.. I know nothing about them.

If the rubber lines are bad, they are gonna find a way to load up something at the end of em.

Asphaltene is the most likely problem. Treat with Fleetguard Fuel System Additive, Cummins part number CC2597.

For more info go to the Mercer Transportation primary thread and search post #17469 by TruckerPete1990. The cause is excessive fuel temperature.

Maybe. But the fabric fuel line need to be changed at 7 years. Even if you dont see a leak the will be sucking air before the leak. And breaking down inside.
