I just bought my first truck and I've got a few questions about insurance. Hopefully one of yall can help me out and point me in the right direction. The insurance companies have just confused me more. First off what's the difference between bobtail insurance and non trucking liability? Which one do I need? I will be leased to a carrier so I don't have to worry about other insurance right now. What's the average price on this coverage? I've gotten two quotes one from OOIDA for around 10k a year and one from progressive for around 4500 a year. Both policies have a million dollars in liability and 80k physical damage. I just can't figure out why there's such a big difference. Maybe somebody can put it in simpler terms than the insurance companies did. Thanks in advance.

Automotive liability: This is what the FMCSA requires the carrier to have to cover accidents on the road ($750,000 for most freight, though brokers usually require $1,000,000).

General liability: This protects you if a dockworker gets hurt on/in your trailer. Some brokers require $1,000,000

Cargo insurance: Covers damage to cargo only -- usually $100,000

Bobtail: If you are leased to a carrier and running under their insurance, this covers the times when you are driving around bobtail but still subject to dispatch. But it might not cover you if you are on home time and decide to drive your bobtail to the store to get groceries.

Non Trucking use: like bobtail, this also covers you if you are pulling a trailer. The big difference is that it covers you if you are running personal errands, which not all bobtail insurance does.

The $10,000 quote probably included auto liability, which your carrier should be covering.
