Call the permit office and ask, but be prepared as they will require all axle spacings and may request you submit a drawing. Don't BS on it as if you require "certification", they will send an inspector out to verify compliance. -

If I remember right, CA will not permit a single axle for extra legal weight in combination with other axle groups that are extra legal. However, they do permit (or used to) a single axle on a mechanical booster. Go figure. Maybe one of the Oregonions or @nate980 with a single axle jeep would know?
