Since the chain is going under the spool I'd say it takes on the wll of the spool and not the rubrail. I haven't seen the wll for a single spool on a Reitnouer.

You've got your trusty 5/16 chains and a big coil. We need a lot of chains in a short area.
    Would you do this?

Or use one chain on two spools? The wll for a single spool isn't specified, so using a chain on each might get Barney excited. Seems like the lesser evil to me, but I don't like the pull/leverage on the rail from so far out.

No J-hooks, spent that money on chrome or Petro PBJ's. :p

^^I don't see a problem with that as long as your rail has the WLL(which it sounds like it does).

Them J hooks are nice, IF you have the space to use them. Sometimes the load won't let ya use them and you've gotta be tricky with how you hook your straps and chains.

Per the fmcsa anchor points do not need to be rated so that point is moot.

That's a legal hook up in the states. I don't think it is in Canada but it might be. I know straps can't be outside the rail in Canada.

That being said I probably wouldn't do it that way but if that is the best way to do it go for it. I don't under stand guys not wanting to use the rubrail but wanting to use the pockets that the rubrail is welded to.

Being that the rub rail is a straight span it is more likely to bend than a stake pocket or spool

You can, but I personally hated to do it, especially on anything requiring the level of diligence that a coil does.

Of course, the closest I ever came to the likes of a coil was a counterweight for a 4100 Manitowoc.

Is that trailer a Manac? I ask because of the square spools. If so the rail is absolutely rated as a securement point.

I've seen a tiny forklift put a massive dent in a rub-rail moving at almost no speed. And you are trusting it to hold a coil?

It's not illegal, take the extra time to wrap the chain around those posts and pockets. Your life likely depends on it.
