Hello,
I'm going through a CDL program at a city college that focuses on container drayage. By the end of the program, I will have my class A with doubles/triples, tanker, hazmat endorsements, twic card, and working knowledge of the local ports. What is the least I should expect to make as a recent graduate? Is one way of pay better than others for port drivers (per hour / per round trip / per mile)? Any known companies that will hire graduates without the year or two of OTR experience to work out of these ports? Thank you, any help is appreciated.

Welcome aboard.......I used to drive NEAR the ports in L.A. but never did the container thing. I don't think you will find anyone paying hourly, but I could be wrong. Most of it is by the trip, I believe, because no one will pay a driver sitting in line waiting to get his load. A couple things to consider, waiting, lots of waiting, then a good possibility the container is over weight and the chassis is not too good. Then the traffic leaving the port. So a Bakersfield run means ALL of L.A. traffic from the port to Sylmar ! Pay ? average at best. good luck

Thanks for the insight. I suppose that if pay will be by the load then that should be my motivation to learn my way around the terminals as soon as possible.

Lol, well that's most traffic around LA isn't it? I think most newbs like me will get the night shift so traffic outside the ports shouldn't be as bad as during the day. Meh maybe you're right, no traffic and still in the #2 at 50 mph at night haha.

You will also need to learn a few languages, as you will probably be the only one who speaks English..........fluently that is!

I started off doing OTR and that was the biggest load of crap I've ever seen. Anything paying by the mile/load/combination of both is basically a scam. Put it this way, you'll turn 750/850 a week gross being paid by the load and turn 1300/1600 a week when getting paid by the hour.
Edit: and for anyone calling bs. I work for white arrow trucking in chicago. they do containers and pay 21 an hour with overtime after 40.lovespink and knyucklehead Thank this. -
