Will a Detroit DD16 set at 550hp/1850tq run with a 6NZ in the same power rating? Looking for real experiences in this matter. Not asking about emission vs pre-emission just want to know powerwise if theyre in the same ballpark. Currently running a pre emission Coronado glider truck with a 12.7 Series 60 500/1650 and its been great. 265,000 miles near trouble free and will be trading in for new end of the year. Wanting a bump in power next time and will be buying another Coronado. My guess is the DD16 should have stronger jakes and slightly better fuel mileage. Will be setup with 13spd and 3.58's on 11R 22.5's any opinions?

I traded a KW with a 625/2050 Acert in it last year with 4.11's out back. Bought a 2016 with a DD16 600/1850 and 3.55's. Both trucks on 11R 22.5's. DD16 pulling the same load got 1mpg better and pulled almost as good, if I would've put 4.11's behind it I don't think the Cat would stay with it on a hill.

I would think stock vs stock both engines would be very close power wise.
The detroit would probley edge out the 6nz in fuel mileage.
Yes the Jakes would be better on the dd16 over your 12.7 for sure. But I really think the gold star would go to the 12.7 for fuel mileage.
There's no way a 16L engine is going to be better then a 12.7 fuel wise. -
I can't comment on power because mine is a DD15, but as far as engine brake it is just about as strong as our ISX600. The Cummins has a very slight edge on it though. But hands down the ISX and the DD are the strongest engine brakes I have ever had. (I haven't driven the MP10 Mack either.)
I have drove my old 6NZ, the ISX 600/1850 and my new DD15 505/1650 back to back pulling the same 12% hill grossing 140,000 pounds and the ISX drop to a top speed 10 KPH slower then the Cat and my Detroit was 15 KPH slower. All of them in the same gear and they all have 22.5 rubber, 18 speed Eaton's and 4.30 gears.
Interestingly they all used within 10 litres of fuel on the same trip. -
A well tuned c15 is pretty tough to beat

Thanks for the replies. My series 60 has been a great engine but I want more power next time. Tough decision whether to go the glider route again but with the 6NZ or go new emissions with the DD16. Not scared of either just cant make up my *#**#** mind! LOL

That would be a no brainer for me.
If you can afford it deffinattly go the glider 6nz route.
Those dd16 are not all that. My 2ws with a 600 file runs circles around any dd16.

6NZ's will run until the end of time if properly maintained. I've heard the same about 12.7 Detroit's but you can get a lot more power with the 6NZ.
We've got one in our fleet with a little over a million miles that pulls stronger than any other truck I've driven, loaded to 130,000 lbs GVW. I drive a MBN single turbo and would love to take that 6NZ and put it in my truck (everything in the 6NZ truck isn't how I like a truck spec'd; regular cab, big shack, tiny deck plate, rubber steering wheel, etc, etc). -
I've driven the DD, Cummins and Cat. For power they can all be tuned to have the same. Thing is, the driveability of the CAT is much, MUCH better. All things being equal (and their NOT, Cat parts are MUCH more expensive, the DD is slightly better in mpg's) Id get the Cat.
