    Hi all,

Was wondering if anybody knows how much one of these transmissions can handle? I have a '07 International with a Cummins ISX 435/1650. I would like to add a little power with a Bully Dog Gauge tuner but I am afraid it will grenade my tranny with the higher torque it will make. I am an experienced driver and am not hard on my driveline. Is cooling an issue, I know the higher torque 13/18 speeds run coolers. If this is the case is it possible to put the cooler on my little 10 speed to keep it from cooking? Or should I just save up and replace the transmission with an 18 speed before I try to add power?

    Thanks

The FR15210b is a 10 speed that has been remanufactured by Eaton. They have also chosen to upgrade some components to improve performance and reliability. The torque spec is max 1850 ft lbs, so I would not increase your torque by more than 200 ft lbs and you should be fine. Here is a link to some more info about the Flex Reman series of Eaton products.

Sorry @brian991219 but the trans the op is referring to is a FR15210b which is rated for 1550 ft lbs.

Eaton does make a 1850 ft lb rated FR Transmission and the model # for that one is FRO18250c

Cliffster21. You should be ok with the transmission. If you have a temp guage for the tranny it might help

    mad38dog,

I was thinking about installing a temp gauge as well, do you think a cooler would be a good idea as well?

It doesn't already have a cooler? We just put in a FRO15210b yesterday and it had an oil cooler on it. A lot of them have the coolant to oil cooler built into the housing. If it has a big dropped section passenger side that is the cooler. The FRO 15,16,17 series are all pretty much the same, they rate them different yet all the gear part numbers and everything are the same so I would think 1750 or 1850 should be fine.

    Cory,

Thanks for your reply. It probably does have a cooler on it and I am just letting my ignorance show :). Mine is the FR15210b it is the direct drive model. My rear end ratio is 2.64. Does the same still apply to a 1:1 tranny?

Yes the internals are the same. There will be two lines two it somewhere if it has a cooler on it

Thanks for the info. I thought he was referring to a Eaton Flex Reman transmission product, which I believe they uprate the torque when rebuilt, but I could be wrong. I was looking at the product literature that I linked in my first response.

1550 ft/lbs is correct for the FR15210B, you can add 100 ft/lbs in the top 2 gears. That is probably how yours is set up, it only has 1650 in the top 2.

The first 1 or 2 numbers in the model number (the #'s after the prefix) is the torque rating and the last 2 numbers is the speeds. FR9210B is 950 ft/bs 10 speed, FR14210B is 1450 ft/lbs 10 speed, etc. 1550 is the highest that I know of for direct drive FR's.

    grapeape,

I know what the model numbers mean, but I was wondering if anyone knows if the transmission will take more torque than that without dying on me? If I need to replace the transmission before adding power then I will do that, it will just take me longer to save up the money for an 18 speed. Do you think I will be ok with 1800 lb/ft of torque on this transmission if I drove easy and watched the trans temp or would it kill it?
