N14 is a great engine . There is a bushing in the front cover , change it about every 250k . If it ever spins you have to replace the front cover. Other then that bushing , there are a few of these engines coming up on 2 million miles with out a overhaul ! A injector here and there , but no major problems.

The only thing I have found with my 94 W900L is that some insurance companies won't cover it because of the age. My ol girl has seen a lot less shop time that a lot of newer trucks.

Can you elaborate more on this bushing? What do you mean by front cover?

There is a bushing in the front cover , that supports the acc drive where it passes thru the front cover. The 855 , which the N14 is based on , just had a seal up there. If the bushing ever spins , it enlarges the hole in the front cover. If this ever happens you have to replace the front cover. Easy to prevent , have not priced a front cover in many years. Even if this happens , it is just a oil leak. Not like it causes major damage , just a pesky oil leak.

It's not too old it's just right as long as you know how to work on it a little.

Depends on the overall condition and who owned it. I've seen 2015 trucks that were in much worse shape than my 2003. If you're going to lease on the someone, some companies require 10 years or newer. I have my own authority so as long as my insurance covers it, I'm good.

Older motors are much more reliable than newer ones if they're maintained properly.

Insurance shouldn't be a problem unless you are wanting full coverage.

    My 4 trucks are two '94s, a '95, and a '85. Engines are two 3406b Cats, N14 Celect Cummins, and Mack E-9 500. Couldn't be happier.
