I am 28 years old, currently looking to start a career in trucking. I'm feeling discouraged though, after reading countless statements about how the trucking industry sucks. Is it possible to be happy in this profession?

Jump in. Suck it up and deal with the company crap long enough to get your own truck. Then drive the way YOU want to. Then it's not too bad at all.

The sterotypes from the public and fufilled by our peers is bad. The job itself is enjoyable.

It's not all sunshine and lollipops but it can offer a satisfying way of life for SOME .... not everyone. Many will never be able to adjust to the lifestyle, especially of the classic over-the-road position because they're simply not cut out for it, and perhaps have family needs that will not allow for weeks or more away.

But there are other ways to truck besides OTR that may work out better for you, but as with any other job, some days will suck, regardless.

I enjoy it. Like most careers you have to do some not so fun jobs starting out. You have to try out different kinds of freight until you find one that suits you.
I've done city P&D, express, long haul, fuel, picker/oilfield, tilt-deck, flat deck, van, reefer, over night pin-pin (terminal-terminal) and hopper bottom.
Fuel was a good job, over night pin-pin was pretty steady pay. Currently doing hopper bottom hauling grain regional, best home time for the money and I like chatting with the farmers.

Don't listen to the whiners; jump in and find out if it's for you. If you don't like it you can quit anytime.

Find a role model or motivator, learn all you can and have solid goals.
Suck it up, chin out and kiss your social life goodbye

Yes 100% .... now do not take this in a negative manner!

You want to be alone and think about stuff for long hours?
you think you are a person that gets out of most bad situations?
You do not really want a home but you want to be left alone?
You can deal with a dispatcher once a day?

    Trucking is for you!

    rachi Thanks this.
