Most of the people I talk to are smart enough to know when I'm finished transmitting. No roger beep required.
I run a General Lee. It's a great radio stock right out of the box.

Just to clarify for those who don't know. The General Lee will NOT work on the CB band "right out of the box"!

Neither one of my Galaxys drift bad on SSB. My 88 especially. They are not the radio on SSB my HR2510 was, but they work good for what I need. (I don't do a whole lot of sideband anymore....just occasionally.)

I had a 949 it was a ssb as well never had any trouble with it drifting great radio. If your worried about drifting install a freq counter then you can tell right away if your drifting.

The original poster hasn't been back in a couple of years.

As for the 979, it will fit anywhere a Cobra 29 or Uniden 78 will fit and have SSB, which was my reason to get one, and a few techs I respect have said it is a good radio, although the clarifier range is limited. I don't have enough reason to buy one at this time, I'll stick with the 29 Classic, it works good enough for what i want it for.

RB is worse than useless for CB, IMO.

I just sold my DX 979 a couple of weeks ago for $100 . I see the guy that bought it had it peaked to 30 watts and has it listed for $140 00

Don't all galaxy radios have RB fromt he factory?

I would just get a small amp. If the radio is not splattering in the first place then a 200 watt amp won't make it splatter.

I had a 979 that sucked balls because the crappy technician hacked it up and I had a 979 that worked great because it was tuned by a good technician. It's all about the technician not the radio.

So, let me start off by saying that I'm very new to CB's, but I'd say I'm far from ignorant. Unlike alot of newblets, I'm not afraid of a little reading, and have done quite a bit up to this point. Anyway, on with the back-story. My dad had a small Realistic in his truck (now my truck) up until I was about nine years old. Well, a few weeks ago, I decided it was time to put a PA system in my truck, and I knew that doing so required a CB. And after a little bit of thought, I figured if I was buying a CB, I might as well get one that's worth a darn so that if I wanted to, I could actually use it effectively. I wound up buying a Cobra 29LX, mainly because I was familiar with the Cobra name, and knew the 29 was a good all around radio, plus the LCD display is really cool. I hooked it up to a Firestik antenna, and took it down to Ladd's Electronics down in Jackson, GA (off of GA I-75 exit 201, these guys are excellent, by the way), and had the radio peaked and tuned, and had my antenna tuned. So far, I've been very pleased with it, but now as I find myself getting more and more interested in CB's, I'm wanting more power and better ears, and SSB. Enter the DX 979.

The main selling points for me on the Galaxy 979 are its compact size (I want to do an in-dash install pretty soon, compactness helps), its starlight display, and SSB. Have any of you guys had any experience with the 979? If so, how do you like it?

Also, if/when I get a 979, I want to put an RXF-75 on it, unlock the clarifier, maybe add a roger beep, and have some receive mods done. How do the Galaxy's hold up to the RXF-75?

Is the RXF-75 even worth getting? Or should I suck it up and get a linear? I don't think I need to be pushing 200 watts and splattering all over the place, but the idea of 80-100 watts from a device on the back of the radio seems rather attractive. (Provided that it's properly installed)
