I've got a TRW I just put on my 78 W900A, I converted from manual to power steering about 3-4 months ago I guess.
Just started getting some excessive free play in the wheel now that I'd like to see if I could adjust out of it before I replace the entire box. I know it has the lock nut and adjustment screw; does anyone know the procedure to get the play out to a decent level without going past the point of no return and end up binding?
Free play is about 8-10" in a 22" wheel....(linear measurement) which is definitely getting to me now that I know it's worse, it's on my nerves. -
If it's used, it may be time for a rebuild.
There's a YouTube video on how to adjust the sector shaft on a TRW Steering Box.W900AOwner Thanks this. -
No it's used. I want to get a little more time out of it before I replace it. I saw the YouTube vids...just wondered if there's a couple or three old school wrenches here with some input. -
The way I do it is use a socket and ratchet and loosen the jamb nut. Then I use a adjusting tool that you get with a stihl chainsaw. The big end fits the nut and and the screwdriver part makes it easy to hold in place.
Then I put a screwdriver thru that tool and turn the screw till it stops. Don't tighten it just turn it till it stops. Then back the screw off a quarter turn and while holder the screw in place snug up the jamb nut. Then use the socket and ratchet and tighten it up good.W900AOwner, SL3406 and SAR Thank this. -
Can I drive another 3-4 days with that ? Please advise, it's a TRW

It's just a seal. Keep oil in it and you can run as long as you want
