The problem with 17 during the summer is all the RVs and pickup pulling trailers bigger then they can handle slowing things down. So both routes have advantages. I normally pick my direction based on weight of the load and season
Either way the key is watching the weather. I actually messed myself up last year taking 11 over 17. 17 just got rain (not freezing.) 11 ended up whiting out. Took me an hour to go 10-15 miles to get to a safe place to park. -
Hey all,
I and my father will be going to Winnipeg leaving Saturday night for a Monday delivery. This is the first time we are going that way and the weather looks great. Which route would you suggest now. I might be hauling a container (dont know yet) with a weight of around 20,000lbs. I am leaning more towards 11. -

11 every time
It's what 60 km longer? And there is 1 hill at north bay that's about it. 17 is up and down and more subject to road closure from lake effect snow.
Power only? -
If planning to sleep on that route be advised every available wide spot and truck stop is full from liskeard to nipigon early each night on the week ends

I always took 17, just a more interesting drive.
Plus I could get Peameal Bacon at the restaurant in Nairn Centre. -
Personally I prefer 17 by a long shot. Sure you have a few more hills but you also have a lot more passing opportunities and better scenery.
I don't drive 11 much but it seems to have a lot more who like to crowd the center line. I know more than one guy who lost a mirror that way. -
Take the old EB Eddy road up through Ramsey and knock off another hour. I never take 11, leave that road for the Talibans.
