Hello again everyone I am coming to you all again for one more question concerning getting my CDL-A. I've got 2 eyes you see, and one of them doesn't work right. I've got an "astigmatism" in the right one. I believe my vision is 20/20 in the left eye and 20/40 in the right eye.

My Question Is: Should I be making an appointment with a regular eye doctor to get a corrective lens as soon as possible, or do I need to see a DOT doctor 1st?

As always, any little bit of help is seriously appreciated. I really cannot get over how much help I've already gotten in such a short amount of time by reading thru this forum & all of your replies to my thread.

    Thank you all!

Get corrective glasses first because you may have a restriction on your cdl that you must always wear glasses while driving.

    Weeezerd Thanks this.

Yes, get your eyes checked and glasses if you need them before the DOT physical. All the physician will do is fail you and make you come back if you fail their generic DOT eyesight exam.

I just paid $39 for exam here in Florida the other day. You'll probably pay ten times that in Connecticut :)

Google "eye chart" they're pretty standard and memorize it. Just kidding.

If you pass with both eyes and one eye if you goof with your bad eye they most likely will still pass you.

    Good luck.

    Get that corrected with glasses.

I usually memorize the chart more or less when I enter the room no matter which way they want to test it.

It's best you get it corrected before you burn through the trip to and from orientation only to be returned home after failing the eye test.

I have a lens replaced on the one eye, fortunately it's enough so I no longer need glasses to keep her moving like i used to and the 24 inches focal point is perfect for the front sights of the colt.

OK so now I know the route is see eye doctor first, then get DOT physical. Thanks to everyone whose replied! I know that for my standard driver's license, i got a waiver from my eye doc after having read online that I would need one with my eyesight being so poor in 1 eye... Then I get to the testing facility & they tell me my sight is OK! So we'll see what the DOT doc says. But I will definitely get corrective lenses first, anything to make myself a safer driver. should of done it long ago. Thanks everyone, again!

Does anyone know if they will allow me to attempt the test without my new glasses 1st, then attempt it with my new glasses on, to see if I am within normal range for driving without them?

oh you know it. I've got vision under my parent's insurance for the rest of this year (til I'm 26) and the exam + glasses is usually quoted at $400 from what I can remember.

Get the glasses first, then the DOT physical. If you can see ok with the glasses, you will pass.

I HAVE 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, and it is DOT passable.

every DOT exam i go and get, i first go to my optometrist who uses all the latest eye exam equipment an office can have. he then hands over a "blue card" which has the approved numbers for my eyesight on them.

i then go for my DOT, and the doctor there HAS to accept that card as in the DOT it does allow for an outside source to do the eye exam.

so do just that, get an full eye exam at your specialist, get that "blue card" or whatever color card it is in your state, take that to your DOT exam.

problem here though, is that if you have to get another DOT physical at your employer, you'll need another blue card, so best ask you specialist for 2?

interesting. thanks for the tip david. I will ask for two and I will ask them if I can get more at no cost when needed. I would go to my regular eye doc but the guy is 87 years old and still uses the lens crane rather than computerized technology. I'm sure he would help because he knows my history, but I cant afford him. I've already made an appointment at the Walmart optician up the road.
