My husband started orientation with Con-Way Truckload in Tollesson, AZ on July 6th - issued a truck and a load the following Saturday, July 11. His truck broke down, billowing white smoke, before he even made it Tucson. Later turned out there were massive oil leaks...he doesn't know what else. He was put in a motel in Tucson - stayed there the rest of the weekend and this whole past week. The truck was at the Kenworth dealer/repair and not projected to be finished until yesterday, July 17. The company was "trying" to send him a replacement truck in Phoenix. Where unfortunately, Con-Way has only a Con-Way Freight yard.
Company puts him in a rental car to pick up said replacement in Phoenix. He gets there yesterday and gets to the truck - another 2011, but it's a KW, which is his favorite. Now, no Qualcom, despite many attempts to reboot and whatever else they do! Of course, all of this happens close to end of business yesterday, so no way to repair.
He is VERY frustrated and rightfully so! He left a company he had worked for for a year. Decent company, but it was refrigerated and he never liked running reefer...too many snags. He went with Con-Way based on hearing lots of input it was a good company. He is now sitting there, no check for last 2-3 weeks (going from company A to B, orientation and all of this breakdown stuff). He wanted to find a company he could stay with and could have moved to Con-Way Freight in San Diego in a year. He worked as dock loader/hostler for them for 2 years before he started driving.
He now doesn't know what to do. Does he take this as a sign that things will be shaky here and move on? He doesn't want to be seen as bouncing around, but he's out there to make a living.
What would you do? Stuck at Con-Way and right about now, very stressed!!

You don't need a qualcom to roll with the truck. Buy a paper log book then call dispatch for a load.
rabbiporkchop, Walt NJ, XFM2013 and 4 others Thank this. -
As long as the "new" truck runs who gives a rip about the qualcomm...right?
rabbiporkchop, Walt NJ and paul_4lp Thank this. -
Probably company policy on the Qualcomm. Y'all are having a tough go of it over there. Sounds like horrible luck to me. The first truck probably sat for a while. Take a perfectly good running truck and park it for a few months. When ya start it back up, seals will be blown, exhaust rotted, parts falling off, etc. Worst thing you can do to a truck. Hopefully they'll get the wheels turning soon.

Ask Con Way if he's going to be paid for the downtime in the motel, through no fault of his own.

They can dispatch him without a QC , he can run on.paper logs , he needs a dispatch over 100 miles for his fleet manager to pay the layover / break down pay
double yellow and RoadRooster Thank this. -
He should of just applied at Conway freight if he has one year driving and had worked there for two.yrs ...they would probably hire him

I wouldn't quit . It is a tuff start but who knows what the next company will be like. It sucks that trucks breakdown and cost us downtime but sounds like they're trying to do the right thing. Just think this time next summer you can be sitting at the picnic table laughing about it. Tell him to hang in there. At least he's probably all caught up on judge JUDY.
paul_4lp Thanks this.
