Those phone rooms with multiple pay phones and several "kitchen model" phones on the wall with direct lines to brokers and dispatchers.

I remember when the WHOLE Iowa 80 would of fit in what now is the Chrome Shop and there was a 76 Truck stop across the interstate where the RV place is now.

I remember the Union 76 in Bloomington, IL, (Which is now a T/A.) Stopped in, ordered biscuits and gravy, the lady said "Half or Full order," I said "Full." She brought out a PLATTER with about 6 whole biscuits on it.

The Toledo 5 (exit 5 Ohio Tpk) Union 76 had one giant shower room with about 15 shower heads along the walls.
You brought your own towel put your street clothes in a locker. Had to guard the door to let my wife take a fast shower. (1976)

Remember when they had movable step ladders on wheels at the fuel pumps for you to use when you cleaned your windows; standing in line at the fuel desk to give your info to pay for your fuel; being able to walk in while fueling, grab a gallon of oil and saying what pump your on, all before paying.

I remember when I used to leave home with 700 bucks cash in my pocket.
I bought all my fuel food and bad habits with it for the week and came home with change !!

Remember when you could buy a reman Cummins injector for 25 bucks ?
Remember when labor rates were 40 bucks an hour at the peter shop ?

Remember when a new Pete listed for a 100 grand you bought it for 70 ?

I didn't have a problem with the bridge, it was the city. It was a first trip for a rookie driver many years ago and the last time I will ever drive anything in that place. I would rather drive LA every week (which I usually did cross country) than to spend one day back there. But, I have no problem paying for tolls as long as the company pays them back, but I would need to have that information prior to paying the toll. That or they have the means provided to me to pay it at the time.

TA in Mesquite off Big Town

76 in Ontario back in my days

    Rip off, Big Springs

    Rips in Tonopah, AZ

    Texaco east side of Tucson

    76 at Rockwall

I like the sausage gravy & biscuits at Seven Standard Road on the north side of Bakersfield. It was the best I found in the 1600 miles from here to the West Coast.

All these brings back some good memories. At the TA at Mesquite one of our hands got his truck stolen, it was a band new conventional Pete which had made about 6 to 7 trips to the West Coast. About 3 to 4 months later the trailer loaded with chickens, the Thermo King run out of fuel, & the load stinking & covered with fly's at a truck stop east of Dallas on I-20. The truck stop checked the license plate them called asking them to come & get it off their lot.

About 1 year later the truck was found due to it being in a wreck with a 4 wheeler in Florida. Accordingly it ran the west coast from Florida during that time period never being notice even though they said it still had the name on the doors & were not covered up, Nashville Trucking Co, Nashville, Ark.,. The company bought it back from the insurance company, cheap.
