Well, kind of the interstate system was not "finished" until about 1990 ? ( i may be off a few years). For instance, you had to get off the interstate at Lovelock, Nv. and go thru town, because the interstate was not built yet around town. The same in Kingman, Az. Even Salt Lake City ! I-5 north of Grapevine, Ca. wasn't built until around 1975 (between Grapevine and Tracy, Ca.) The only way was Ca. 99 which went thru some cities and even had traffic lights to get thru. U.S. 101 up the coast from Oxnard to San Jose went thru towns also, with stop lights. I-80 thru Reno before the interstate was finished, I remember that.
Remember when?

Back when one night a fellow hauling cow hides ran off the end of the interstate close to Pennwell, TX, out onto all the re-bar where no cement had been poured & ruined every tire on his truck & trailer.
Sure was not much fun driving out the west side of Fort Worth back in those days while they were building the interstate.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
I can remember going to the 76 in ontario ca when I was a kid with my dad, once found a caterpillar on a piece of green garnish on my french toast, waitress was apologizing the whole time, took it back and had it remade ( i'm sure they just dumped it on a new plate ), but the whole table got a free breakfast because of it.
x1Heavy and CrappieJunkie Thank this. -
I forget where it was but I remember being somewhere with my wife & her salad had a worm crawling around on it. Ugh, that upsets my appetite. -
How bout cherry street truck stop or Loretta's geeze those were recreational reptiles fav hang outs there in Fontana Ca. I remember 93 between Kingman and Phoenix 2 lane road with deadman's curve. It made the top 10 list of one of the most deadliest highways in the USA. Tons of those Crosses along that road back in the day

The "dump", lol. Used to stop there often. Overdrive Magazine always ran a full page or centerfold ad of the Mass 10 Truck stop in the '70's.
Funny thing is, the New England Truck Stop is still in existence on 20 in Sturbridge, Mass., and hasn't changed all that much. Recently stopped in there and saw the old pictures of all the cabovers and 70's era trucks at the fuel pumps were gone off the walls; an indication of change. BUT, the original guy that bought it 30+ years ago still runs it with his boys. They're trying to keep it the same, but they said it's a tough business to run. The men's room hasn't changed at all..still kind of grubby, with the 70's vintage colored sinks and stuff, lol.
Remember Sturbridge Isle, now the "Pee Lot" next door? That used to be great. Had a nice buffet in the building there that's all boarded up now. The town residents all complained and had the place shut down for years until Pilot somehow got it opened up with a new building. I hate going there, no parking after 4 pm and you can only fuel between midnight and 5 am unless you don't mind waiting in lines for an hour.
Buzzy's fuel stops up in Portsmouth, NH still the same...Green hot dogs make outsiders nervous, but it's a New England thing, lol.
What ever happened to Starvin' Marvin's in the south...are those all Pilots or Quarrels now or what? -
