Exactly. You have 4 acres of parking for trucks, the trucks aren't making any money other than fuel, IF they bought it there(fuel), and maybe profit a little from food that they bought at that truck stop too. Someone has to pay the property taxes, the mortgage if there is one, the upkeep for the asphalt, etc.

Would you open a truck stop with acres of free parking for fun? Would you buy land and pave it and let people park there for free and litter? Then, pay taxes and upkeep? I'm curious OP.

Those that "charge" for parking have been doing so since long before the new HOS rules and eLogs. There are a few around here and there that used to have paid parking that no longer do. The truck stops that are offering "reserved parking" are doing so more as a wanted service then a "profit scam"

I'm new to this industry. How does that tax write off work? And what all is eligible? I've been saving all my receipts so far. Thanks

There is hundreds of truck stops that don't charge.Get yourself a pocket truckstop guide and it will tell you who charges.

In short, most purchases that are required to perform your job can be used at tax time as you itemize on Schedule A (Hotels, pens, parking, portion of cell phone, special clothing requirements, CB radio, cleaning supplies, etc, etc) Don't need to save your separate meal receipts as meals are handled differently. (search elsewhere here for more info on standard meal allowance and/or per diem offering from employer)

Smart. Very Smart. That pocket guide is almost as valuable as an RMN MC Atlas. The two should be required study and required material at every truck driving school. Of course they make an App for that . . . but I'm usually still taking my nap . . .

while the app STILL loads . . .

then connects (if it can - not a whole lot of cell ANYWHERE in the desert) . . .

Just sayin' . . . paper may not be "cool" but it rarely fails. Plus I get to put notes in, like . . . never mind my notes. They are probably considered inappropriate these days. They work for me on the fly, though, when the techno stuff doesn't and I don't have to worry about the whole "electronic device" thing. Nobody EVER texted me on my map book or pocket guide. I'm not sayin' use it driving. I'm saying they don't DEMAND I pull over and pay attention to all "blurping and chirping" at me when I'm driving like electronic doohickeys seem to. We work out our communication in advance.

    I like it that way.

I have no issue paying to park. Whether it be getting fuel or purchasing in store products or actually handing over cash. If I owned a truck stop, I'd definitely have that policy. But I would make sure it was worth the price of admission. Level parking, not pot holes etc.... The way so many drivers disrespect the property and businesses of truck stop owners and rest areas etc..., I am surprised more places don't require payment. So many are just flat out lazy, disgusting pigs. A trash can will be twenty feet away but they'll just drop their trash bag and bottles of piss out the window and drive away. Just amazes me....if they would get their lazy butts out and do a basic walk around pre trip, they could take get a bit of exercise and dispose of their garbage properly. But then again, hell will freeze over before that begins happening.....

As I've thought about it over the years, charging to park will keep some of the miscreant drivers out. Bring it on
