The reason the truckstops had to raise their prices is because of trucks that park there, dump their trash all over, tear up the lot, use the parking lot as their trailer drop lot and don't spend $.01 there.

I wonder if any of the individuals here have any idea what it costs to purchase 20+ acres of prime real estate at an interstate hwy interchange, spend 10's of millions of dollars to improve it, hire and train the staff, pay the payroll and maintain the place. Not that I am feeling real sorry for the Haslam family or anything, but it costs money to do these things, and something has to generate the revenue to pay for it. The days of someone parking for free and not spending a dime at the facility are coming to an end.

Crusty Yankee,
You are wrong. The truck stops owe us there very existence. Without trucks making fuel, food and any other purchases there wouldn't be any "travel centers"! They can't survive on 4-wheelers alone.Lowa3468 Thanks this. -
Blind driver,
You are lucky to have a daily expense account. I do not think the reserved parking is bad where needed. Just the ratio of 30 reserved out of 90 total is a bit extreme. I only needed to park for 1 hour to have dinner and then move on.Blind Driver Thanks this. -
SHO-TYME,
No one said that parking has to be free but if you are a free parking facility and make 1/3 of your free parking area reserved only it is overkill and just to make more money. It must be successful because after all the years this particular truckstop has been in existence all of a sudden they are doubling the size of the parking lot and everyone will now pay to park. They didn't raise their prices they are creating new ones. Most truck drivers do not trash, tear up the lots or drop trailers and do spend their hard earned money on all necessities that are available.Lowa3468 Thanks this. -
I do find it interesting that so many here appear to be ok with a truckstop charging for parking. Yet I do wonder if they are equally ok with when the state increases the road tax or raises the toll rates?

I get all kinds of surveys from P/FJ and the latest one was interested in my thoughts on reserved parking spaces. How much I thought was a reasonable amount to pay, had I ever paid for a spot at TA, etc.

drivers that think they are entitled to anything but buy fuel at a fuel stop are wrong
when we drove in the seventies and had group showers no one complained
now this me generation of pigs think brand new showers in Flying J are lousy
just because these days i dont pay to park because i run I80 to the west coast
does't mean i dont appreciate a reserved spot on those few occasions it comes up -
i can't even imagine what the land value is for the Ontario Ca TS's
and the trouble is more the dispatching system that leaves some drivers stuck there -
How many times have you heard or been the culprit of parking and not spending a dime in the restaurant? They/you sure did use the toilet paper, paper towels, washed your dishes from your walmart food in the sink, etc.
