I did not see a thread on this topic, if one is started I would like to know where it is, if not please reply here. I just wanted to get some feed back on fuel economy when a driver fills up at the big chain truck stops. I have noticed as much as 1-1.5 MPG increase when I fill up at the mom and pop shops VS the big chains. My last experience at a Petro in California has me wondering what is going on, the pump handle was extremely hot, I know fuel has to be heated but it was 75 outside. Fuel at these big chains just don't seem to last as long according to my IFTA and my calculator. Is anyone else seeing the same thing?

Hot fuel is less dense, temperature compensation at the pump would solve that but it isn't going to happen.

I've seen less extreme examples. We were to buy fuel from the Perrysburg OH TA but it was noticeably warm, a driver kept records, he got over half a mpg better consistently by buying his fuel at the nearby Petro.

I have heard good and bad about Flying J and Pilot.

I know about the expansion issue, but I am not kidding when I say 1-1.5 MPG gain. It sounds like BS but I checked over and over again with a calculator and fuel slips. That's why I wanted to see if anyone was seeing the same. To bad that driver did not fill up at a mom and pop station instead of a Petro, I would love to see the dif. A 1/2 MPG is still a pretty big gain.

Before Williams truck stops became Pilots, I would get around 1/2 MPG or more less fuel mileage from them. Their price was cheaper, and it evened out, but there was a definite difference in MPG.

I can only fuel at certain Pilots now, so I can't compare recent T/S fuels.

The Petro fuel was noticeably cold, we have that here as well. I can't keep track anymore, I fuel where it works out to fuel on the longer runs so I can log it.Every trip is more affected by wind than by fuel.

What I found was all of the green fuel stops where we could fill at will gave poorer performance than some of the other places, the other TAs had cold fuel where I have fueled.

Some of the TAs have BP fuel, some of the Flying Js have other brands.

I prefer Sinclair if there is no difference in price, but the ISX was the only engine I have found that is that finicky about fuel.

Check out Pilots above ground tanks, they are all painted black. Every Love's I have been around they are either white or tan. I know commuting in my 4 wheeler, I get about a mpg better off loves unleaded than pilot (and about half gallon better in the big truck). Dont know if its because of fuel expansion.

The company I work for has nationwide account for TA,TA bought out petro so we will get that to. But anyways the fuel in the perrysburg, toledo area all comes from the same place and is exactly the same with the only diff being petro with above ground tank and TA with the under ground tanks.Pilot has been loading all there fuel out of marathon in detroit for all the toledo area stores and beaverdam. But really its all just a big mix of sunoco, marathon, citgo, arc,bp and delta fuels cause if its cheaper thats where its loaded at unless its under contract. The J loads most of there fuel at the arc teminal or sunoco.
anymore its just all messed up, man we load at sun and drop it at bp stations around here.

the only pilot where i get exceptional fuel mileage is Evanston, WY i have excellent results but that is about the only pilot, I prefer Petro myself.
Avoid the Pilots at West Memphis at all costs, we got fuel contamination there

I get better mpg from T/A when it come to the big chains (I am very anal about keeping records) and always get my best mpg from a little mom and pop fuel stop (to small and no truck parking to be called a ts) in Castle Rock Co. I stopped using Fly J last year because I would have to replace fuel filters every 5k when I was using them exclusively.
