Hey all,
I am new to this, and in light of taxes have read some varying thoughts on itemized deduction material for drivers. Can anyone provide some solid input on what you can/cannot itemize and value limits? I am getting ready to start training, and would like to have as much info going in as possible. Thanks everyone!

You can deduct anything you need/buy while on the road ..anything from toothpaste to boots. Everything. Cell phone, paperwork, atm fees, shower fee, food, motels, tolls, whatever. Save your receipts !
Hank the Cow Dog Thanks this. -
you have a standard deduction. in order to claim deductions from every day things you have to spend at least that much before it'll count.
that's what i get told every year anyways.
you used to be able to deduct driving to work if you hit so many miles per week. cell phone bills.
you get a cost of living called PER DIEM. you can either save your food and motel receipts. or you can claim per diem, which will be higher unless you motel every night out on the road. you can't claim both. so don't even both saving your receipts.
everybody on here will have different opinions. even the tax guys that write your tax forms won't have all the answers.
get yourself a satellite radio and listen to road dog trucking channel 146. kevin rutherford talks taxes on his show when people call up and ask. midnight eastern time.blairandgretchen and Hank the Cow Dog Thank this. -
Thanks guys!! Does this differ as a student? I will be training with a company and should be hired within the first week, but still be a student.

as a company driver you don't get to deduct vary much because most of it is paid by the company. My advice is that if your a company driver don't worry about all the receipts. you will have to turn them in to be reimbursed but other then that you really wont need them. your per diem will be on your pay check and you wont rack up enough to deduct more then your standardized deduction. Also anything you do as a student does not count because yourn ot going to be hired yet. as a student your just taking classes and have a conditional job offer, your not considered hired until you get your cdl.

now, if you buy my food it counts because its a business expense (recruiter) and obviously tolls, hotels, etc.
cell phone gets complicated because if you use it just for business it can, but if you use it for pleasure you can't
this is just what I've been told from other drivers -
Thanks guys! I appreciate all of the feedback!

I use ATSB tax service out of Colorado, every year they mail me a worksheet with items to deduct,
I fax it back to them and let them do the rest. -
the per-diem is 4 a motel room if needed and 1 meal a day, anything else such as tools, work cloths, items 2 do ur job are all deductable if ur employer dont reimburst u 4 them, http://www.ooida.com/EducationTools/Resources/per-diem-rate.asp

I thought your per diem covered your meals
