Updated as of June 23, 2011

The law that governs the annual tax imposed on the use of heavy highway vehicles (Form 2290) expires at the close of September 30, 2011. We have not published Form 2290 for the taxable period beginning July 1, 2011 and the form is not available at this time. As soon as we know when the form will be available, we will provide that information on this page. In the meantime, you can still pay your 2010 excise tax, get your 2011 tags and register your new or used vehicle.

My state posted this last week:

HVUT Filing for the July 2011 to June 2012 Tax Period- Under current Federal law, all Federal highway excise taxes will expire on September 30 2011. Congress has not passed a highway re authorization bill and it is not clear if a bill will be passed prior to the expiration of the current bill. It is likely that Congress will pass a temporary extension of the HVUT prior to its expiration. However, until the IRS has more information, it is delaying issuance of the Form 2290 for the upcoming tax year. The IRS expects to offer more guidance to states in the next couple of weeks. The potential expiration of the tax on September 30, 2011 has no bearing on taxpayers registering their vehicles in July-August or September 2011, as existing regulations allow the state to accept the Form 2290 Schedule One from the July 1 2010 to June 30, 2011 tax period. The IRS suggests you direct carriers to www.irs.gov/trucker for information including how to contact the IRS with specific questions.

I was doing my IFTA and typical other Quarterly filings and when I logged into WI's site to file,
I saw the disclaimer. I had no idea either until this AM....

Guys, I came across this article: 2290 Tax Form 2011 – Changes are coming! in articlebase. It seems greentax2290 service providers allow filing for 2011 but they will transmit the returns once IRS resumes accepting 2290 returns. I think this is fab as it will help save our time for 2290 filing.:biggrin_25519:...What say??

Personally, I'm just gonna wait until the IRS accepts it. It won't be late either way.

But, whatever works for you is AOK too :biggrin_25519:

That would be nice if we did not have to pay it but they would figure out another tax that would end up being more than what the 2290 tax would have been .

I dont know about other states but in Ky its best to file in person and get the tax paid stamp then, other wise if your like me and get your next years plates in Dec you might still be waiting for them to mail your copy back. There slower about mailing them out than a Wal-Mart check out lane in Christmas.

IRS 2290 will be due Nov 30, 2011.
They will begin accepting returns Nov 1st, 2011.

However, Congress still has not extended the HVUT past 9/30/2011...so there are some scenarios that can play out...
