Trucker rips through bridge. Guy had a lot of experience.

Yep no excuse. I'm always checking heights no matter what. If in doubt don't do it but get out and figure it out carefully. I doubt any covered bridge is high enough to pass thru with a TT but I could be wrong on that.

yeah, may as well just floor it after hitting the first bridge support! What a freakin fool!

Living in NE ohio (the land of covered bridges) we see this all the time.
My home county has one of the largest covered bridges in the world, the smollen gulf, and it's hardly suprising how much damage occurs when someone tries to cross on in a big truck. -

Already posted yesterday.

Was that the blame it on the GPS thread?

To my knowledge, no one has yet to destroy anything on it. I've taken a big truck across it, but it was empty and I drive a mid-roof daycab and a low dump on the days when I'm near it.
That county has about 40 other covered bridges, ranging in age from 10-70 years old. A lot of driver hit them. It ain't pretty when it happens. Support trusses ripped out, edge fasteners get pulled out of the ground. Down by Youngstown, a driver destroyed a covered bridge, it's still closed off- unlikely it will ever be repaired just because of the sheer cost of doing so.
The older bridges are low weight limit, most top out at around 2-3 tons, and typically have a height of about 10'. Put a big truck on em, it's a recipe for disaster.
The newer ones have concrete/iron frames with wooden crossmembers/roofs, and their height is generally over 13' but rarely 13'6''.
We keep em around, because between the covered bridges, the lake, the Amish, wine and maple syrup- it all makes up for it in the tourism revenue, typically.
I don't particularly care for covered bridges, I think they're a waste of money. What's so special about a bridge with a roof? Who's pulling over to see a roofed bridge? People with issues, that's who. The same people are decapitating hookers and raping infants to death...I'm not even kidding, Google Chad Chadwick. He's up for the death penalty in my home county.
HE LOVED COVERED BRIDGES!
EDIT- I would like to mention, that's an old article, and I got it confused. Joshua million is the individual from my home county that is "accused' of raping a toddler to death, whereas Mr.Chadwick only beat an infant to death.
The scary part? I attended Chestnut elementary, and Rowe Middle school with both of these guys.Last edited: Apr 30, 2014

That is just plain stupidity. Yep the bridge height was marked at 10' but even a giraffe has enough sense not to go through there.
I too grew up in Lancaster County and have many fond memories of covered bridges. If you are going to tear something up make sure it's not a historical landmark!
drvrtech77 and semi retired semi driver Thank this.
