i now drive a school bus,and there are a few things they teach you in bus driving school. highway stops are really bad you are required to turn your flashing yellow lights 500 feet before you stop and you do stop on the traveled part of the highway on your side. the only time you stop in the middle of the road is on gravel country roads. they teach to you open the door only after you have checked front and rear of the bus for moving vehicles. to the driver who thought the radio was to loud, ride on a school bus ride and see how really loud the kids can get. had that same thing happen to me but with a p/u and when the police caught him he was 3 times over .08. my guess is the truck driver was going to fast and not paying attention plus following to close. to most people flashing yellow means hurry up and get around the bus before it stops. did not mean to get on a roll but the safety kids are a big deal. be safe out there

There was no "sensationalism" about it. The driver did nearly hit a school bus and the girl wasn't that far from the bus. I know there this was, I work in Minnesota. The fact that there was no accident was simply a matter of luck. In PA if you run a bus with flashing lights it's an automatic suspension, hopefully it's the same case in Minnesota.

i figured choosing the words I did may appear that I am defending the truck driver. Not the case. He should lose his license because there is absolutely no excuse for following so close to have to make an evasive maneuver. However when you read the statement from the statement from the state police I was fully expecting to see this girl approaching the bus and jumping out of the way at the last second which was simply not the case here.

That girl should be on a teaching video about why you should always be paying attention to your surroundings

This should be a lesson for everyone! As a bus driver its your job to observe everything involved with a student pickup,

including hazardous vehicles following to closely behind you. And as a truck driver what the heck do you think

school buses do? Possibly make irregular stops to load children and maybe not signal with enough time

for you to slow down. Lots of finger pointing that will happen hear. Thank God that girl was smart enough or

taught properly to stay far enough back from the pickup point. I'm still driving a bus and you be surprised how

little respect drivers have for the buses they just want to be the heck away from them. How would you feel it that was

your daughter or grand daughter that had been standing there? Talk about asleep at the wheel both drivers!

    Sorry just venting!

Clearly the truck driver wasn't paying attention/distracted driving. But I wonder what role the bus driver played? Did he have his yellows on for a sufficient time? A quick yellow to red is not a sufficient warning. How fast was he driving? Usually a bus picking up students has a line of traffic behind them. Maybe it was their first pick up? Maybe it was a Ricky Racer bus driver that made a quick stop? Oops, this girl didn't get a ride today type deal.

I'd like to see how it plays out? A $5000-$10,000 fine and reckless driving/improper passing is sufficient. Jail time? Nah. Drivers need to take their driving more seriously and not take things for granted.

The bus driver? Possibly remedial training in defensive driving. Slower driving and plenty of flashing lights might of avoided this. I know in my county there are several bus drivers with zero training and drive like idiots doing 10-15 mph over.

Who is Ricky Racer? For you young bucks that innuendo was used back in the 80's that started with Rick Hendrick and Hendrick's Motorsports in Nascar.

Thank god the little girl didn't get hurt. It could of played out a lot worse.

From watching the video it's tough to tell but if you watch the reflections it appears the lights came on late and that truck passes pretty quickly once you see the reflection which means he must have been REALLY close.

Turns out in this case it may have been a blessing believe it or not. Had he been farther back but still not paying attention it may have given that little girl time to move into the path of the truck and then that would have been tragic.

The he more I watch it I get upset that the driver made no attempt to brake or sound the horn to warn the girl. Even if he didn't see her common sense tells you that if those lights come on there will be kids nearby.

When traveling around a school bus, you should always be prepared to have to stop. Always. And watch for kids. Kids are no different than deer, especially little ones.
