You always read about the accidents each day and feel for all parties involved. Today a Semi ran into a car injuring a woman and her son. This happened to be the daughter of a friend of mine whom I have known for several years.
I don't know the details regarding the accident, but somewhere like in the military a safety stand down should happen.
Stand down one day, do a detail inspection of your tractor and trailer. Get anything fixed. Don't leave it for the next driver, too much of that happens.
Go over the Smith System and understand the need for paying attention to your surroundings. Keep a situation awareness of all around you. If someone does something stupid, adjust your driving. IF driving a truck taught me anything, it taught me how to mentally think all the time with the "what if" situations all the time. Leave yourself an out at all times.
At the end of the day all anyone wants to do is to go home to their friends, family and loved ones.

So, we should all do a safety standdown and you don't know any details about the accident?
Don't get me wrong I'm all about safety, I'll preach it to about 3500 teens and their parents this year alone.Bandaid Thanks this. -
It'd be quite a feat to see every truck on the road pull over at the same time, all the drivers hop out of the driver's seat and stand at attention, face the nearest flag, and salute across America.
I know this isn't what you're talking about, but this post made me think of this.Bandaid Thanks this. -
Response to Trygg's epic meme.
You can take the 4 wheeler outta the four wheeler but you cant take the four wheeler outta the 18 wheeler? -
How many accidents are posted here daily along with local news. I know it could be anybody's fault.
I knew when I drove pretty much all the time I picked up a trailer there was something wrong with it all the time. Lights out, tires bald, cuts in the sidewalls, ribs under the trailer split, etc etc. I took the time to correct what the prior driver should have fixed.
How many drivers look at traffic and say "what if" to any cars around them, front and back.
I just see too many accidents being posted with loss of life or injuries. -
Stand downs are made for jobs where you can take the whole job site and preach about safety and resets before returning to work. You can never achieve that in trucking unless you call all drivers into the yard at the same time.

More on this..
was rear ended in Columbus , Ohio by a semi. He claimed he was
trying to get out of the way of an ambulance . He was sited .

I don't believe the OP was referring to everyone doing it at once...to me he seems to be speaking to personal responsibility.
Mark Kling Thanks this. -
You can take a day to take inventory of your situation, your truck, your trailer, your methods, etc, but all it takes is one second of one day, and all that is out the window. No one can operate at 100% safety factor 100% of the time. Never mind that some times people do stupid things, out of your control, that all the Smith system training in the world will not alleviate.
Will the perfect driver with perfect skills 100% of on-duty time, who is not full of crap please step forward so you can receive you're award ...
But perhaps to the OP's point, there are BAD drivers out here who are literally an accident waiting to happen. Let's hope they figure this out and quit or fix it before they hurt somebody.Mark Kling Thanks this.
