Storm Pounds Iowa With Hail, Powerful Winds

NEWTON, Iowa --

Clean up is under way after spring thunderstorms hit Iowa for a second day with strong winds, hail and heavy rain.

Trooper Doug Cutts told KCCI that three tractor-trailers were blown off Interstate 80 near mile marker 177 near Newton.

The same storm also led deputies to close Highway 6 in both directions at County Rd T38 four miles west of Grinnell due to power lines in blocking roadway.

Highway 146 was littered with pieces of debris. The wind peeled destroyed a tin roof, blowing pieces of it onto the road and nearby fields.Power lines were toppled and crews began quickly working to restore electricity.In the town of Monroe, in Marion County, emergency managers reported to the National Weather Service that multiple homes had hail damaged siding, windows knocked out and a machine shed's roof was torn off.

Winds also blew a semitrailer off a highway near Independence, causing another truck, a van and a car to end up in a ditch. Tennis ball-sized hail pelted the Waterloo area.

Monday night around Rockford, IL was not a pleasant time.

We caught the edge of a storm coming through with 60 mph winds, heavy rain and possible walnut sized hail. Not something they would want the travel trailers to be in.

Not to mention my truck. We barely missed it though.
