Empty. Doors open. Went OVER the guardrail instead of THROUGH it. Empty. Probably shagging MT's to a p/u hub and most likely real tight on time. LTL is SUCH a "hustle", super tight dispatch, culture. No excuse for too much hustle in the wrong place, wrong time and wrong conditions. Up to the driver to say; "WHOA. No go. Gonna have to be late. Road conditions don't allow for hustle. Adjust on your end."
Not slamming him, just my take on the situation. I feel for him in a way. Been there, done that - only (but for the Grace of God) no wreck. I'll give him credit for burying the Mule's nose in the guard rail after he jumped it. Brakes were shot on slick and slide at that point. Only way to stop was burry her nose in the rail, let the tailing trailers fold into it and take any back hits on the trailers.
Accident was already in progress and a real bad head on one in the split second making. Living to tell about it to the Safety Director and not taking anybody else out head, or side, on doing it was the new priority. He (or she) managed THAT real well. That was a textbook multi trailer "burry and stop" and you take a HUGE risk in a multi trailer (or a single, really) plow your face into the "stop" thing that you will be the fatality in doing so.
I'm not excusing OR slamming but I'm giving driver a "good job" taking an: "OH ####E - DEATH; ME? OR THEM? - ME! - GO!" situation and turning it into an: "Oh crap, this SUX- property damage" situation. Human life and limb versus fubar property; at the great risk of your own life to do it. Especially snub nose LTL Mules. Made a mistake driver. Willing to take your own life to make sure nobody else lost theirs 'cause of your mistake. You did it and made it through OK. Everybody did, so good job on that. GUARANTEE his (her) "hustle" just got un-hustled for the rest of his (her) days. No matter WHAT the dispatch board says.Last edited: Jan 19, 2015
kewphotog, sherlock510, dog-c and 4 others Thank this. -
Before you all continue with your " I'm so much better than that" comments you need to understand your time to do the same may be coming. We've all had pure stupidity close calls that we're too ashamed of to talk about that we got away with. You don't have a clue if Estes was on wet pavement one moment and ice the next. I don't know if the driver went for the guard rail or the shoulder and jumped the rail but huge kudos for not plowing straight ahead into the cars regardless. Remember he or she is one of us; there will be more than enough hate from those who aren't.
dog-c, Shaggy, pearcetrucking and 2 others Thank this. -
Estes tried slowing down a while back, Not much you can do on ice and being empty , that back wagon goes hold on for the ride. Can't accelerate and can't stop. I think he did a decent job under the circumstances, Crap happens.
allniter and pearcetrucking Thank this. -
Goly, it makes us all look so bad..

yup EXACTLY. Its been pure ice from monday through wednesday up here (ND) and seen a couple fools like this in the ditch on hwy 83. Give yourself a couple miles to speed up and to slow down and you will be fine. if there is traffic..... SLOW THE #### DOWN. -
