I am a company driver. Will the DOT shut me down if the truck has a significant oil leak during a random inspection? The leak I have is about (1) drop every 2-3 seconds while the engine is running. If I am inspected and they find the leak, does it go against my record?

If an oil leak is signifiicant they can put you oos, 1 drop every few seconds sounds pretty bad to me but every dot cop see's it in a diffrent way.

Oil leak is not an out of service defect. It can be written up under 396.5 as an excessive oil leak. I have never known anyone to be written a ticket for it by me or the guys I work with. Not saying someone, somewhere may write it. -
Where does it state this? -
yes in conneticut they will put you oos happend to me years ago when i worked for roadway.......... but i believe that is a state law not federal

§396.5 Lubrication.
Every motor carrier shall ensure that each motor vehicle subject to its control is'
(a) properly lubricated; and
(b) free of oil and grease leaks.
Can he shut you down? Yes
Will he shut you down? Possibly if he see's it? -

You're correct it is a violation, but I have never seen it anywhere in the CVSA out of service criteria. State law..... in some State's...possibly shut it down for that, but I have never seen it.112racing Thanks this. -
