electronic logbook questions

    i agree i know ill never get rich as a company driver but i would like to be able to support myself and possibly a family someday and live confortably i dont kill myself just do what i gotta do to keep a good steady average

    bayou i use a app for my android smart phone called bigroad. it allows you to print or email logs. i also found a print app called printershare that will let me print my logs from my phone to my wifi printer. i carry a wifi router and that printer in my truck. i do print out the dvir and the log everyday. i do this because i figure if i have it all right there it will be less of a chance for them to get pissed about having to wait plus that would be the time for me when all the technology would glitch out. luckily it has worked pretty good so far.
    i was given a walk around roadside inspection a week or so ago. the big road app has a button on it that you push then hand the phone over for the current day. it then only allows them to look at the logs. i had my last seven printed out so i gave them to him plus the eighth day just to look less guilty. he took one glance at them and handed them back. i was a little worried about what they would say about the phone app logbook but so far i really like it. it also lets you sign electronically which i was told by a scalehouse dot that they would have to still be hand signed, but this guy didn't care about that at all. seemed that when he seen that i had it all right there and was doing it electronically he lost all intereset in the logbook at all
    plus it allows editing through out the day it is just like using a paper log without the wast of paper.
    i am not affiliated with these apps just telling you what works for me.

    Some folks have some real issues to deal with that would make a psychiatrist a lot of money. What is it that some folks fear that they feel the need to take a shot at someone who finds that using an elog is easier and they like it? I need to check with the American Psychiatric Association and see if they have a technical term yet for elog paranoia. Maybe elogaphobia is a good one to use. Agoraphobia is fear of crowds or crowded situations. Elogaphobia must be the fear of e-logs. Both are unwarranted and unjustifiable and a sign that should seek out some therapy to deal with such issues.

    it seems that when ever an officer asks for my log book and i tell them i have an eobr they loose interest, but i still keep a seven day recap to show them and then send me on my way...............happy trails

    We are only scared of that which we do not know.

    I think for most of us that it is the lack of control that makes us against eobr's. When they come into effect I might have to go back to hauling livestock, they seem to get exemptions from the stupidity of lawmakers.

    I would agree with that. It is more of a fear of something unknown. I have not lost any more control using them than I did with paper. No e-log or EOBR or ELD or whatever the term of the day is, stops me from bobtailing on home even if I am out of hours. With the running part, over the years I gradually moved towards a "log it as you do it" philosophy, so that the elog really didn't change anything. I have gone over the 11 hrs driving on e-logs due to weather issues. Again, no problem due to the two hour over allowance due to unforeseen weather. I have gone over a few minutes before I got to where I was heading. Keep it within reason, and no one really seems to give a rip. Sure, you could get the Barney Fife kind of LEO or inspector doing an audit that would take issue with the fact that you went over by 8 minutes, but I have had my e-logs audited and even roadside checked where there was a few minutes over, and no one really cared. There is still a little common sense out there, at least among the more seasoned LEO's and DOT personnel.

    I think if folks would invest some of the time they use in criticizing e-logs to finding out how they would work, then a lot of those fears would fall away. I also understand how some think that by having that box in the truck, that someone is watching over your shoulder. Hey.... no one cares! Unless you do something really goofy that causes someone to be alerted, then no one is watching. For me, it is nothing more than something that does the logging for me and doesn't make the stupid forgot to fill in something or forgot to sign the log page mistakes that are always possible with paper and some LEO can use as an excuse to give you a log violation if he is a total *&%#.

    You call it what you want but all the little "time" saving things a guy does on paper without ever hearing a peep from anyone CAN NOT be done if using ELD's. You can not log the way I do without getting "spanked" or "swatted" on the behind. My paper log is more efficient to my operation then any ELD would ever be.

    What works for you and your operation will not work for me and my operation therefore I have a very good reason to be against them. Simple really. Maybe you are the one that needs to work out your fear of using pen and paper to log?
