    Thanks for all the replies.

I am leaning towards buying a 2008-2010 because I cannot afford the extra 20K at the moment.

From what I understand from Rawze's post, many problems to the EGR/DPF engines are caused by lack of information and improper maintenance. Is that the case for the 08-2010 models as well?

Also, I saw the above post to not add a DPF to a pre-2007 truck. Why not? How much that cost? I'd appreciate getting more perspectives on that.

Do 2007 trucks already have the DPF? From what I read online, it seems like '07 trucks will already have those installed.

    EPA07 trucks have DPF.
So there are 07 trucks without DPF.(those with 06 engines)

08-10 is DPF (no DEF) that is the problem. People might try to tell you they are OK but you really REALLY need to get the engine ID # and VIN then check with the manufacturer of BOTH separately. If you find one that has not had DPF related problems then go for it. Most that you check on will have a long list of serious issues, do not think that proper maintenance will solve the problem. Why would someone have a new truck in 08 and NOT maintain it properly? If it was constantly in the shop when it was under warranty then why would it be any different when you own it? Most companies who bought new 08's knew they were having issues and knew that it was costly to deal with DPF maintenance so they bought service contracts. If a guy had a truck under warranty AND had a service contract (you can find that out from the VIN by checking with the truck manufacturer) and STILL had DPF problems, you will fare no better.

I will second everything that Guntoter said. Those that say a DPF only engine works OK if you maintain it ARE THE FEW AND LUCKY ONES. They may account for a very small percentage of owners of these trucks. Even if you do buy one, you will be lucky to average 5.5 mpg in the summer time with it. Even if you have no problems with it for a few weeks and are starting to get ahead, it will hit you with a week of downtime and all that money you were ahead, start all over again. Repeat this until you decide to sell it to whatever sucker you can get to buy it and cut your losses and try again. This time I bet you will want to revert back to NO emissions technology, not even EGR. This is what I did! I bought my DPF Kenworth thinking I would be a California runner, but I couldn't be more wrong. I did ONE trip there over the course of my first year. I do far better off NOT going to Cali. If not running Cali isn't an option for you, then wait til you can afford to get into a DPF AND DEF equipped truck. At least you will have a shot at making it then.

Note: If you do decide to buy an 08-10 dpf only truck, only pay what you figure you could get for scrap metal for it. That is all it is worth. Don't forget to take out the cost to have it hauled to the junk yard.

Please excuse my ignorance, but is 2011 the first year DEF and DPF were manufactured? Or could I find some 2007 that will have both...

The 08-2011 PRE SCR (NO DEF) cummins engies ARE the CM871 engines that I talk about in my other posts. They are truly NOT the horror story that everyone proclaims any more. That is why I made those documemts,...IT WILL ABSOLUTELY STOP THE DPF/EGR PROBLEMS IN THEIR TRACKS EVERY SINGLE TIME ON EVERY SINGLE ENGINE THAT HAS NO OTHER MORE OBVIOUS PROBLEM, making that engine very reliable. Its too bad there are so many totally ignorant mechanics and repair facilities out there, including obviously the mechanics that work at PackRatTD's company. ASK ANY OWNER-OP who has one of these engines that have actually done ALL the things I say to do to keep them healthy and you will find an owner-op that is very satisfied with this engine.

This information is still very new for these engines, it will take time for it to get spread and used. It is solid info, and will work for, and applies to ALL CM871's. The real problem now that has been created is that mechanics and repair shops are too stubborn to listen to it and use it.

I am not making this up,...I am not just posting theories or something that happened one time,..I have gone out of my way for the last 2 years helping hundreds uppon hundreds of owner-ops with this engine, solving WORST CASE SCENARIOS, and not a single one of them had DPF/EGR problems afterwards. I do this for FREE!!! because I enjoy helping others and enjoy the challenge.

I just wish that someone would do the same for detroit and other engines.

Excuse me? Ignorant mechanics? The Munoz brother who is in charge of the shop, Carlos, knows our trucks inside and out. He has forgotten more about maintaining trucks than most drivers will learn in a lifetime. If he says the system is flawed, it's flawed.

The CAT with dpf has a bad reputation. Probably best to avoid the CAT.
