The difference is you are a small trucking company that is willing to train new hires how to drive Right ? So, you're not a school. You would just need to notify your insurance carrier that you will sometimes be training new hires. Then you're covered in case of accident. You will not be awarding the new hire a certificate of completion. Him getting a CDL is proof he knows how to drive and the regulations also. The difference is he obtained his CDL without going to a school. You don't need any kind of document from the state to teach him. He's not paying $$$ to you to learn. You hire him to come on board, train him your companies procedures and teach him how to drive also.

The large LTL company that I was with when I was training a few drivers, the company was "self-insured" and they did not get any type of authority or licenses from the state. If a dock workers expressed the desire to driver, he would go and get a CDL Learner's Permit, the company would let him go with me on short runs and allowed the trainee to come over on week-ends and meet me and we would "play" around in the yard.

The company, once satisfied and the trainee felt confident, an appointment was made with the DMV for the trainee to see if he could pass the road test. Nothing complicated, pure and simple.

Also might want to implement some type of contract between the people you are training for a small amount of money, so they just don't quit after you trained them.

We are seeing a lot of companies hiring new drivers and then giving them training. Even some of the LTL companies have new entry programs. Make sure this isn't a non-starter with your insurance carrier. they throw the wrenches in the works these days.
