Do to a detached retina many years ago, I have a blind spot in my right eye. From my point of view, it's blind from about 9:00-12:00 (12-3 facing me). Other then that, no other problems and can see 20/20 corrected. I can have full periphial range to my right out of the bad eye. With my left eye open I have no blind spots, but I know they test each eye.

i plan on paying $80 to take the test to see what happens, just checking here first to see if it's a no brainier and I shouldn't even bother.

    thank you.

As long as you can read an eye chart you're fine. They don't sit you down in a lab and analyze your eyes. They stand you behind a line and say ok read the lowest line you can with each eye etc. Basic stuff. At least that's how my physical went.

The long form says "at least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) in each eye with or without correction." And then it says "At least 70 degrees peripheral in horizontal meridian measured in each eye."

Yes, the 70 degree peripheral is what concerns me.

The peripheral test I had was the standard doctor puts one finger up beside my ear and asked when I see it as he moves to the front of my head. If your blind spot is 9-12 in your right eye you should see finger before it gets in your gap. Good luck,

Perfect, and thanks. I should do fine testing from the ear. The nasal is the blind part and is easily compensated for by my left eye. I'll still do a dot test before I do anything stupid, like quite my job only to fail a the test at a company sponsored CDs school. :)

Smart thing as you said is to go for the DOT check up and see how you do before signing up with a school.....read $$$$.
Now if you do not pass and you still want to drive you can check into a state medical waiver. Thing is you would be stuck driving instate, no crossing state lines for 3 years before you could apply for the government waiver to cross state lines. Check with your state DMV for this eye waiver, I had to call as all information is not on line for this waiver. My med card is good for 1 year, waiver for 2 years.

I have some nerves in my left eye that died a few months back. Eye test it is 20/60, need 20/40 to pass DOT medical. The only issue it gives me is judging the back of the trailer in the mirror to the painted line that represents a dock (you can bump) I need to be with in 2 feet of to pass my state test.
Landing gear to a mark on the ground I can judge, same with the 5th wheel when I need to be no more than 2" from when I do a drop to check that the trailer is "self supporting".

Also know they check for color blindness too as part of the eye test.

    Good luck to you
