I've got the Keep Trucking app on my phone. Basically it's an electronic log that you have to manually input duty status changes. My question is, if my truck breaks down and my company puts me in a Qualcomm - less rental, would this app fly in a DOT inspection or would I still need to fill out paper logs?

I don't have any experience with slogs but, i thought you need to have the ability to print them.

If your electronic logging system has the ability for you to print and sign each day's log, and it contains all of the required information on the printed page then it's just as acceptable as a paper log. You must be able to print the log pages in the truck, and you must keep the last 7 days of printed and signed logs with you, just as you must do with paper logs.

I don't think that an app on your phone is going to be approved by d.o.t.

I was using that app until I found out you needed the ability to print it in the truck. So yes it is accepted but you must be able to print it upon request. As for signing it, you can do that on the phone so you do not have to print it in order to sign it. Nice app, I like it.

I noticed after I posted this that it has a DOT inspection mode where you can fax the logs, also a FMCSA reference in case they refuse to accept it.

I used Big Road on my phone two jobs ago. It was legal in that it could fax/email copies to DOT or your workplace, it collected an electronic signature, kept truck and DVIR info (our DVIRs were paper, though) and it kept 8 days of records on the phone. We were asked to email the office everyday after our shifts. It made attempts at automatically logging locations, but users are better off manually changing duty status themselves. I also used it as a back up whenever QC broke in my truck during my last job. I sent everything to Safety to keep my reporting up to date.

That works until you get to what we call jump scales in Montana where there is no fax.
