Nwroten: Most people do not understand having a 30,000 Lb. truck to pull a 20,000 Lb. trailer for a hobby and the gestapo questions it also. Allow me: Is correct and I do not thank competing in shows paying like dollar poker is considered a for profit enterprise. My wife took the kids, now the grands, to shows in the mountains to the beach,at least 15 states. That rig is the horse hauler, hotel, and transportation if needed recreational vehicle" maybe glad we decided not to go to the week long extended family reunion at the Iowa State Fair Grounds" that helps raise good kids the American way. Professionals trying to slide in this category make it more difficult, you can haul your friends horse but if you are a trainer and your friend is is paying you to haul it's not recreational. Expect to be pulled over in the middle of no ware and have your fuel checked and be interrogated at the scales occasionally. If you are the real deal and your paper work is in order it is just some aggravation not a problem.

As has been said, if she only stays in one state its pretty simple and she can run on regular tags. If she goes to other states then it can get tricky. Someone mentioned Iowa in an earlier post - Iowa is by far the most aggressive in pulling over horse trailers (pulled by whatever) and then dinging the driver with all kinds of tickets for not being compliant with commercial rules. Other states that I know have started doing some of the same tactics, although not to the same degree, are Minnesota, Oklahoma, Kansas and New Mexico. I run on farm tags ('03 Pete 387, single screw, 15 horse trailer) and have a DOT number (my authority) but not an MC number because I'm not for hire. I run pretty much the whole country and the only scale that gives me a hard time is the Westbound scale down on 10 going into Arizona. I have to buy a few permits every year but its still way cheaper than getting apportioned tags. I have to do IFTA and the heavy vehicle tax and am subject to all the HOS and logbook rules, etc that any other commercial vehicle is subject to. We're heavily involved in horse showing, and a lot of people are still running on their normal tags but if they're hauling larger horse trailers and especially if the farm name is on the vehicle or the trailer more and more states are getting pretty aggressive about pulling those people over and looking for any commercial connection to ding them. Hope this helps.
